Question Working At Petland

There's a new PetLand opening and I figured I could try to make the best of it by applyng to work there and I really need the money. Since they, like most pet stores, carry all the Kaytee junk. What would you think if I asked the manager to start carrying Oxbow products? What would you think he or she would say or think?

Re: Working At Petland

The manager can't change the products that the store sells, that sort of thing comes from higher up. You would have a better chance at keeping your job by sending anonymous e-mails to the store simply mentioning the benefits. you also have to consider that oxbow may choose not to allow petland to sell their products so another route you could use is to e-mail Oxbow instead.

Honestly, in today's dire financial mess that the world is in, you have to find work where it is available. While nobody in here wants to support an organization that regards living animals as expendable merchandise...you have to do what you have to do to pay the bills. As my grandfather once told me, (and this was long before this ongoing recession we're in): "Whether you're a CEO making six-and-a-half figures or whether you're a guy shoveling **** on the streets, if you're making an honest living and have a strong work ethic, nobody can hold it against you." And in honest living, what he is referring to is something that's not illegal, I.E. being a bookie, drug-dealing, you get the idea. (Although we know that the conditions in which many animals are bred in mills should hardly be considered, if they even are considered, "legal".)

Nobody should feel superior to others because of where they work--afterall, you can't ever truly know the situation that another person can be in for where they work. I know quite a few people who graduated from top colleges, had internships and other credible experience under their belt but are now unemployed and have to take work where it is available. On the flip-side, I have a couple of friends who only have a high school education and somehow managed to fall into a decent paying job simply on the basis of knowing somebody who knew somebody that worked there.

As far as getting them to incorporate Oxbow products into their stock, I agree with what the other poster said--it would be a challenge, as normally all their stuff is already planned out and I'm sure contracted with Kaytee where both parties take a decent cut in what is sold. It certainly doesn't hurt to try, so definitely go for it, but don't be discouraged.

By the way, where is Petland? I don't think I've ever heard of it. Anyways, just so you know...I don't think anyone would be judgemental of what you do for work as long as you're making an honest and decent living until something more promising comes along.

Re: Working At Petland

Petland is a really awful chain that sells puppies and kittens. They often keep the puppies even when they are grown into big dogs, in tiny crates. If they are lucky, they get walked.

They house the rabbits and guinea pigs in the same tiny tanks, no hay. Often they are sick. I've seen many mite or scurvy pigs in there. It's disgusting.

They usually have large snakes or other reptiles in tiny enclosures too.

Not all Petland's sell dogs and cats. Like one of them by a KMart don't. And they don't keep them in tanks and feed them hay but the conditions are barely half decent. I've seen hamsters with really bad mites there.

Re: Working At Petland

If you do end up working htere try to educate, educate, educate. Tell me about rescues and about the hardwork and animal takes.

If you really wanna you could tell them about the puppy mills the dogs come from and such. Then some good might come out of the situation.
