No,we are going to let her have pups 1 more time then spay her.
This is the act of breeding. If you let your female get impregnated, you are breeding her.

No, you're just the horrible breeder who is helping to deny hundreds of thousands of shelter animals a warm home and an owner with an open heart.

Re: Cavy & Dog

Quote:
breed ( P ) Pronunciation Key (brd)
v. bred, (brd) breed·ing, breeds
v. tr.
  1. To produce (offspring); give birth to or hatch.
  2. To bring about; engender: “Admission of guilt tends to breed public sympathy” (Jonathan Alter).
    1.
To cause to reproduce, especially by controlled mating and selection: breed cattle.
To develop new or improved strains in (organisms), chiefly through controlled mating and selection of offspring for desirable traits.
    2. To inseminate or impregnate; mate with.
  3. To rear or train; bring up: a writer who was bred in a seafaring culture.
  4. To be the place of origin of: Austria breeds great skiers.
  5. To produce (fissionable material) in a breeder reactor.
That is a quote from a dictionary. One definition is :"To cause to reproduce, especially by controlled mating and reproduction". That is exactly what you are doing. You are a breeder. And trust me, there are alot of breeders out there that love their dogs, but they continue to breed them. You may love Cocoa, but you breed her, making you a breeder, which means that the first time you bred her of your own free will, you joined the legions of breeders out there.

You are dog breeders. You have purposly breed your dog 2 times and plan to do it again. This makes you a dog breeder.

The person that I got my 2 sick dogs from only had 1 dog too. She was a breeder. She broke my heart, my husbands heart and my children's hearts...and she isn't done yet. My other dog Stella is still sick. More heart break is coming.

Re: Cavy & Dog

Saying there is a overpopulation of dogs is like saying there is on fish, horses, cats, birds, guinea pigs,or any other thing.I myself think there is an overpopulation on people, this past week our car has almost been hit 4 times because PEOPLE weren't watching.

Re: Cavy & Dog

*stands up on the soapbox and clears her throat*

I just have one l'il thing to say: We are HUMAN. We are SELFISH. No matter what 'good intensions' we may have, we are still selfish. There are thousands and thousands of children out there in desperate need of a home, yet tousands and thousands of couples every DAY chose to have their OWN, even going through thousands of dollars in fertility treatments and whatnot just to have their OWN. In the same vein, people love their pets. They want their pets to have babies of their OWN.

Admit it: you people who ended up with pregnant piggies by accident or adoption find a guilty little pleasure in seeing your own pets having babies. You might have been angry, scared, or both at discovering the pregnancy, but the first time you saw those miniature versions of your beloved pet popcorn around the cage, I know your heart melted and you were glad for them. I know that's what happened with me, at least.

There's something about YOUR pet having its OWN babies that satisfies that selfish part of us all, I think. Someone who breeds 'responsibly' (and by that I mean people who actually care for their pets and find homes for the babies and do their research and everything... because I REALLY believe breeding is responsible for nothing other than overpopulation - human AND animal - and health problems) now and then shouldn't be chastised like they are so quickly here. I'm not saying I think it's right to breed, or wrong to spay and neuter your pets (if you haven't, please, DO IT!), but don't jump all over someone because they want puppies. Eesh. Can't we all just get along? I'm pretty sure we all love animals here. Isn't that what matters?

BTW... if you want to chastise someone, chastise the lady who spent - what was it.. $50,000? - to get her cat cloned. Can you even begin to imagine what a shelter could do with that money? Not to mention it's just.. kinda retarded. But again, us humans are selfsh. I'll get off my soapbox now.

No. Get over it.

And your definition of responsible breeding is woefully inadequate.

I'm pretty sure we all love animals here. Isn't that what matters?

Actually, NO. It isn't. I'm 'pretty sure' 'we' all have a huge disparity in our level of education about animal welfare as you've inadvertantly just highlighted.

Re: Cavy & Dog

No, she makes it clear that there is a high chance of trouble, such as death or defects. A high chance is not a certainty by any means. ALL pregnancies are fraught with risk.

For example, a human has only a 10% chance of developing preeclampsia, but I almost died from it. That 10% didn't mean jack to me when I was laying in an operating room. Paralytics were running into the IV in my hand & I had a mask on my face putting me to sleep. The last thing I heard? "We're going for one minute from skin to baby." All of a sudden that 10% = 100% when it was happening to me. My 1st child was 10 weeks early & weighed just over 3lbs. That's just one example.

Are you prepared to face the reality, should it happen to you, that your beloved pet has died in birthing complications because of actions you took? That x% chance won't mean a thing to you then. All that will matter is that she's gone. I really hope you reconsider. Take your prospective homes to a purebred shelter if they really want purebred pups. I lost a chihuahua to breast cancer. Spaying her may have lowered her risk. But I didn't. Make decisions now that you won't regret in the future.

You do realize that is a 14% mortality rate? What about the next litter? What if that's the litter that her labor fails to progress? I used to be young, reckless and irresponsible. My chihuahua, the one with breast cancer, had 3 litters. Her 1st 2 were uneventful labors. Only one pup died out of 6 or 7 total. The last litter resulted in an emergency trip to the vet. She had an IV of oxytocin because her labor had stopped after the 1st pup. The bill? $350 for a 12hr stay with an IV and observation. Every pregnancy is a risk. You seem to think that simply because she was fine before that she will be again. That's not necessarily true.

Please do a better job of reading and quoting. You are way off base. One thing I really won't tolerate is blatantly wrong statements posted as facts. ESPECIALLY when you are quoting my own writings. You are treading on thin ice.

Re: Cavy & Dog

I really dont care if I have to have a full breed dog. I dont mind mixed breeds too. I have had mixed breeds all my life. iI just think that breeding is not an option to me at all cause of over population all over the world.

Re: Cavy & Dog

Dood.. please.. read the post. Really. I think I made it pretty clear I believe there is no such thing as responsible breeding, nor that I condone it. I'm saying only that there is a HUGE difference between what this person is doing and what, say, a puppy mill, is doing, and there is no use chastising her for it because she (I'm assuming female here) is human and selfish and the people who are lined up to take the puppies are human and selfish as well.

Jumping down someone's throat every time they have an opionion differing from yours is NOT the way to make them see your point of view. This is why no one takes oranizations like PETA seriously. Please, don't think I'm dissing them now... I think they're a wonderful organization with wonderful ideas and just go about bringing their messages in entirely the wrong way... kind of like I see so often here. This is why I usually refrain from posting, but keep coming back, because there are also some wonderful people with some wonderful ideas and a wealth of information. If I hadn't read this site, my two guinea pigs would still be in a cage only slightly bigger than the original pet store cage.

That said, I have some questions for you to consider, Snipzig. Do you know your poodle's family history, as well as the male's? Is there any, ANY history of birth defects? I don't know what poodles are known for, but I mean things like hip displesia, skin problems, bad heart, anything inherited. Also, are you prepared for what could happen, and willing to face the consiquences? Let me tell you a story: A friend of mine had a dog who was truely her partner. The dog went everywhere with her, potected her, even saved her life on a few occasions. She was a mutt - shepard, chow, and great dane, to be exact - who even labrador owners thought was a pure bred black lab. She loved her dog, and being a selfish human, 'accidently' let her escape outside while she was in heat. Sure enough, she wound up pregnant. She had 12 beautiful puppies, everything seemed fine.. and 3 hours later she was dead. They began feeding the puppies around the clock, but one by one the puppies weakened and died, until their other dog adopted them and began producing milk. Only 3 survived. The girl cried harder than when her own brother had died, being riddled with guilt knowing it was no one's fault but her own for not only not spaying her dog, but actually letting her breed. She talked her mom into getting their other female spayed as soon as the puppies were weaned, and kept two of the puppies and got both fixed as soon as they were old enough. It's been 5 years since then, and one of the dogs is her 'hearing' dog, and the other.. well.. he had a bit more of the shepard look about him, in that he looks like he has nothing BUT shepard in him, and has had arthritus AND hip displesia diagnosed since he was a year old, and doesn't get around so well. Any time anyone talks about getitng a pure bred dog, or breeding their dog, she shows them the shepard, and if she can get them in her car, actually drives them to a shelter to educate them.

Now, ANOTHER thing for some of you to consider ... looking at BOTH sides of an argument and being able to then argue your side in an informed way is way better than 'You is WROOOOONG!!!!!' 'Nooo.... YOU IS WROOOOONG, RAAAAAAWR!!!!!1111!!!' This is for BOTH sides, now. That is more likely to make someone step back and take the other side into consideration. It actually took examples for me to learn, but I grew up in a redneck town and so never had anyone TELL me any of this was wrong.

... oh, I forgot to get off my soapbox. I'm getting out of the kitchen now.. it's WAY too hot in here. Have fun, folks!
