I dont get it

I know why pro-breeding stuff isn't allowed on here, and I agree with it, i really do. But I dont get the whole anti-showing thing. I'm not tring to break the rules, just trying to get information. I have never shown, been to a show, or plan to go to a Guinea Pig showing but why is it now allowed here? I just wanted to get information on it. Do they do 'bad things' do the piggies health, stress them out to much, keep them in bad conditons, or just an all around bad thing to do to your pig?? Thanks in advance for your information!

And just out of curiosoty, do you think dog showing is bad too?
Just wondering, not trying to start an argument, really!

Re: I dont get it

With regard to guinea pig showing: all of the above. Cramped, inadequate conditions. SUPER high stress level. Exposure to possible diseases. And since the POINT of showing is to evaluate breeding stock, by nature it encourages breeding.

Re: I dont get it

Generally breeders are the ones who show. Like with dogs.

There are plenty of other places you can get "information" on showing, none of which will involve starting an argument or violating the rules here.

You can do a search to find why it's not allowed, all the times the question's been asked before, and what the rules are regarding questions on the issue.

The short answer you're looking for is showing promotes breeding by attempting to create an animal worthy of being deemed show/breed quality. Those that aren't up to par are sold off as stock or worse. Conditions and housing for the animals are often less than humane and the mentality of those that breed and show is hardly ever with regard to the animal's well being.

As for discussing it on the forum, it's a simple matter of respect for the forum's rules and philosophies.

Re: I dont get it

If you just look at breeder websites you will see litters after litters up for sale a few will say "showable" and most will say pet quality. This does not even show the number of guinea pig pups and dog puppies that are killed because they are not cute enough or posses certain traits.
Not to mention the fact that pure breeds are less healthier in dogs than mix breeds over all. Dog shows promote over breeding, culling out puppies (killing them), and some level of inbreeding. There are way too many unwanted pet quality animals to promote the over-use of showing and breeding.

Re: I dont get it

This is from a previous post of mine in regards to showing.

Unfortunately Showing leads to breeding and breeding leads to over population.

Plus showing is hard on the animals and they are usually shown in poor housing conditions.

At least that's my take on it.
