Breed type dilemna

Hello guys! Im planning on breeding Peruvian cavy because they look so cool! The problem is that we are having a doubt on the type of BREED of our boar. According to the person that gave us the pair, they are both peruvian cavy but only the sow promotes faster hair growth. I have some photos of our boar, please take time looking at him and could you confirm on wether he is really a peruvian or as we might have suspected, an abyssinian type. Thanks in advance!

Re: Breed type dilemna

First of all, take a look at this page:
http://cavyspirit.com/breeding.htm

If you’ve come here seeking breeding advice without knowing anything about it, please take the time to look around and see all the reasons NOT to do it, and all the reasons that the members of this forum will not encourage it.

If you’ve come here seeking breeding advice without concern for what is a tremendous overpopulation problem already, you’re in the absolute wrong place. No one here is going to give you breeding advice, and no one is going to encourage or condone doing something so selfish.

Peruvian pigs are “cool,” sure, but you could adopt your “batch” of cool-looking pigs just as easily and you’d be giving a home to pigs that otherwise wouldn’t have onem pigs that might be facing euthanasia. If instead you opt to create innocent lives whilst ignoring and contributing to an already enormous overpopulation problem, you’ll need to find another forum to ask your questions and do your bragging.

Re: Breed type dilemna

Why have you come here to ask a question about breeding? If you didn't notice this site is totally against breeding. Not only is it dangerous to breed a guinea pig but there are TONS of guinea pigs and other animals that are in need of homes. To many pets die in shelters every day.

Hopefully you do some more research especially on this site and maybe guinealynx on the dangers of breeding guinea pigs.

If you think peruvian's are so cool you can find pigs that need homes just as easily. I just found one on craigslist.

Animals are NOT property they are living beings that feel pain. Please don't breed.

Re: Breed type dilemna

why do you want to breed? just go out and adopt a whole bunch of peruvians. theirs no need for piggies to go through that pain of having a litter just because you think they look cool.

Re: Breed type dilemna

You are aware that 1 in 5 sows DIE giving birth, aren't you? Not to mention the gross population problem you'd be contributing to as others have mentioned. Breeding isn't just some hobby to pick up. Giving birth is painful and life threatening to your pigs. It doesn't matter how well you take care of the sow or how healthy you think she is, you cannot escape this fact. Please, if you have any love for your animals or any shred of responsibility in you, do not put your pigs through this.

If you love pigs and want to have a bunch (assuming you have the cabilities and knowledge for caring for many pigs) why don't you get in contact with your local humane society or cavy rescue and find out how to become a foster parent? You'd be doing something great for animals and people every where.
