I feel bad about even replying to this person now because she walked away angry and I have a bad feeling she's going to retaliate by breeding her own guinea pigs. Hopefully she does more research. |

If a person "retaliates" to responses s/he doesn't like by breeding guinea pigs, I suspect the person was going to be doing it regardless and any replies in this thread made very little difference anyway. |

Allowing an animal to suffer be it 2 minutes or 2 hours is an inhumane concept. With that thought in mind, then it's better to just not have the animal. |

I agree with you pigsmakemesmile. And to the OP bottom line the reason you shouldn't breed is just because there's so much that can happen, you might lose all the babies AND lose the mom. I wouldn't chance it. |

According to a message she left on a members profile, she's already breeding. She's had 8 births already and is awaiting two more. So there is no "retaliation", she was doing it well before she posted this thread. |

| I'd like to point out that this thread was just asking for an opinion. I think that there was NO point in creating this thread if your going to breed anyway! Your just trying to gain attention and bring yourself trouble. Ughhh... |

Maybe it was an attempt to justify (for herself) what she's doing. Or, it could just have been something to gain attention. Sometimes people think it's very entertaining to try to get folks riled up over things like this. I just feel bad for the poor pigs subjected to her version of "care." |

It doesn't matter how well you take care of the animal. Something sudden can go seriously wrong and you may not even be able to notice it until it is too late. If there are petstores, there are people who have guinea pigs from those petstores that people are going to want to get rid of them. If you ask a friend or something. Please make sure you are not buying from a breeder, or anything that seems to be a breeder because that will only contribute to the overpopulation issue. Overpopulation is a very serious issue right now, and is also one that can be solved with the help of people simply taking the time to adopt an animal instead of buying or breeding one. For every animal that is bought through a breeder or petstore, one in a shelter, etc... is euthanized because it did not have a home. More than half the animals that go into shelters (usually healthy animals), never leave, and are put down before ever going to a new home. No offense or anything, but no one should ever have an animal as fragile as a guinea pig shipped in a mail type of thing, let alone being shipped more than what 5 or 6 hours across the Atlantic/Pacific Ocean on a plane? Seriously? If you read about breeding issues on the forum, and online, you may take on a new perspective as to why we are so against it and trying to stop it. It would be highly irresponsible of anyone to breed their animal right now, considering that there is such a global issue with overpopulation of companion animals for pets such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, horses, rodents, reptiles, birds, etc... You will definetley learn a great deal from everyone if you listen to what we are telling you, guaranteed. It is alot of information to take in with such a short amount of time. |

Thank you very much ! But the problem is that here in Greece there are no shelters or rescue centers . The only way to have guinea pig is from a pet shop and in Greece guinea pig are no overpopulate the opposite are very rare ! So the only answer on Why not to breed my guinea pig is because maybe the mother or babies will die... right? Accept lethal babies that i will give attention not to have ! |

I'm assuming if she is in Greece, where she said that most people don't even know what a guinea pig is, then there is little chance that there are knowledgable vets. Her pigs are likely getting no type of professional care. That is so sad, considereing that people on this forum are willing to take their pigs to the vet at any cost |

Okay. Yes, you live in Greece and like ColoradoMama said, its probably unlikely to find a cavy savvy vet. But if you were to live in the United States: You got a female guinea pig and are looking for male but yet a pregnant female turns up in a shelter and you refuse to take it because you want to breed your own. Then the mother and guinea pigs are taken away to live seperatly. There's more Guinea Pigs to add to the population |

I don't understand the relevance of a comparison between her location and the US. If the entire story is assumed to be true, she is already breeding the guinea pigs and probably posted this thread as a means to get attention. Also if the entire story is assumed to be true, I highly doubt she's given any consideration whatsoever to proper veterinary care, whether or not it's available, because she deems these animals to be property and playthings. Why value a life if you can just breed one to replace another that dies? Continuing to argue with this girl, in my mind, is pointless, because she's already doing something many of us believe to be cruel and wrong on a number of moral levels. |

Ofcourse for other counties that guinea pig and rodent are overpopulate breeding its bad thing . But here with the right circumstances and the help of a vet is a nice thing . Guinea pig's wouldn't exist if nobody was breeding them . I breed them ,i care for them , i love them and i make the best to be happy ... Also don't say anything for me because you don't know me ! Also if you want to know i go every week to my friend who is a Vet and i have made 2 neuters to 4 of my male guinea pigs and i am going for the third . |

You keep saying that there isn’t an overpopulation problem in Greece – but that doesn’t make it true. And even if there’s not, that’s no justification for you to be breeding your guinea pigs. What’s the point? Really? To sell them to pet stores? More likely than not I think this must be true if you’ve had as many litters as you claim to have. So if there isn’t an overpopulation problem in your area already, you’re well on your way to making darn sure there is one in the very near future. Shame. You came here asking why not to breed despite already having done so, or claiming to. Now that folks are pointing out the need for veterinary care, suddenly you’re having many of your animals neutered? What a remarkable coincidence. I’m sorry, but I find you to be disingenuous, and I think your credibility is questionable, at the very best. |

I have 11 guinea pigs. 2 of my male are neutered not beacause i dont want them to mate but because i dont want them fighting. I dont care if you believe me or not. You dont live in Greece so you dont know if there is an overpopulation or not. I told you before that guinea pigs are very rare here. Last edited by Paula; 06-03-09 at 02:13 pm. Ok. First off, your a minor so you can't have adult friends that are vets unless that is a lie. Neutering doesn't change Guinea Pigs behavior which means you haven't done your research. Third, an overpopulation is all around the world. I don't care if you live in Greece or not because it's true. If Guinea Pigs are rare how did you get your hands on one? If you can't provide proper care, don't make the animal suffer just because you think it's cute and you want it anyway. Last edited by Paula; 06-03-09 at 03:08 pm. |

What the heck does not neutering have to do with them fighting? Unneutered male guinea pigs can get along fine. Neutering only makes them unable to reproduce. You clearly know very little about guinea pigs. Chances are you are pairing them incorrectly and have too small cages with little amenities. |

Eliana - You are obviously misinformed - I have 2 unneutertered males and they get along wonderfully. Stop making excuses. |
