Unhappy The suffering of animals

Hello everyone. I am writing to let people know and see for themselves the suffering of the animals being shipped to PetSmart. I had heard a lot of people saying how animals, not only being shipped to PetSmart, but also being shipped to other pet stores as well are being mistreated, starved, neglected, and abused. When I watched this video I felt physically ill. Don't let your children see this video. It is very hard and sad to watch. I am simply putting this on here for educational purposes only. I, in no way condone any of the sick and twisted behavior that is being shown in these videos. I think these people are sick and need to be imprisoned for a very long time. But please, watch this video (if you can stand to sit through it) and let me know what you think. Thanks.

Re: The suffering of animals

I dont understand how some people can do this. It's like it's fun to them to hurt animals, all becuase it's a quick buck to them. It's sickening. I cried when I saw the Oprah episode on puppy mills. Those people have to have something worng with them in order to do something like that. My ears are still ringing from that poor birds scream went they clipped it's nails, and it's not that it's annoying me (as ringing ears usually do) it's haunting me. It was so bad I felt like I could feel that birds pain and I still have chills down my spine.

Re: The suffering of animals

I've seen this video. It's horrible, but it's true and it got me to literally see what goes on behind the scenes of pet stores. It's not just petsmart. It's everywhere. It's disgusting. I've have a pretty tough stomache when it comes to seeing things except when it comes to animals. This video had me in tears. I watched a few other videos and it's haunted me. Things I've seen at work don't haunt me like the things I've seen in those videos.

Re: The suffering of animals

At my petsmart they're all healthy and active and the lady who worked with the small animals said she played with them everyday

I got my two piggies at a petsmart and they're both healthy.
Of course that's just my petsmart, but yes, I've seen pet stores with HORRIBLE conditions!
I went to petco to get some extra hay because I was running low and didn't have time to order some offline, and the guinea pigs where in small tanks with like 5 in there, and there was a female that was alone--and pregnant.
All the other animals where kept in bad conditions as well

Re: The suffering of animals

I was in a Petsmart the other day to show my fiance the horrible conditions they let the piggies and other small animals stay in and they had 5 males (so they say) in one aquarium like cage that wasnt even of sufficient size for one piggie. Three of them were just laying in the cage and didn't even budge when my fiance got down to look at them. My fiance was very upset and asked the employee working there why they put so many in one cage. The employee responded with, "well why don't you take one home and there won't be so many in the cage", and he walked away. I feel horrible for the animals, I wish I could just house all of them in a huge cage, but that would encourage them to just breed more.

Re: The suffering of animals

Then you got incredibly lucky that they came out of the pet mill unscathed. Most are not as lucky.

Your guinea pigs came from conditions that are pictured in that video. Open your eyes.

Re: The suffering of animals

The Petsmart near my house may get their guinea pigs from mills but take good care of them once they are there. I went in to look the other day and they were in a really large (bigger than my 2x4 c&c) with igloos and hay plus they had a bowl of tomatoes, some sort of lettuce?, and baby carrots. I don't think anyone should run right down and buy from a petstore but at least the one here takes care of them once they are there.

Re: The suffering of animals

Not every petstore treats their animals badly. I'll give somebody that. It's the fact of where their animals are from and how they were previously treated. Puppy and whatever other animal mills are some of the most horrible places you've ever seen. No animal should ever have to endure the treatment Mills do. Cramped spaces, dirty conditions, constant breeding and pregnancies, and lousy food. Some of the animals there, to flat out put it, are basically raped because the owners of these mills will make sure they do. When you buy from a petstore, it means in a sense, your helping out the mills by giving them business. And of course, there are many petstores that join in on those same cruel acts and treat they're animals no differently then the mills.

And just because some small petstores may not buy from puppy mills, doesn't mean their animals are scott free either. They more then likely got them from a breeder. Someone adding to an already overcrowded pet population while there are others dieing because they cannot find good homes. In very rare cases, you will find a petstore who genuinely only adopts out animals from a shelter. But unfortunately, such an operation is very costly as the little money the adopt fee is needs to be spread out evenly between the petstore and the shelter. In the end, unless business is extremely good for them, it rarely happens. Better off going to the shelter in first place.

So yes, in the end, you can say the odd petsmart/pet whatever may take good care of their animals IN the store, but they have a background. It's the fake smile hiding the misery.

Re: The suffering of animals

I totally agree. But until everyone stops buying they will never close. At least these are taken care of. All we can do is inform anyone who will listen. There are so many people that just don't care though so I can't imagine it will ever end.

Re: The suffering of animals

I couldn't sit through half of it. That is terrible.
There's a pet store near me, at least they keep guinea pigs housed separately, but they live in these aquariums. But they look pretty healthy to me.
I'm starting to doubt whether they are really healthy.
