I was petsmart the other day to pick up something for my dog and they had a dog adoption thing there. I was just wondering whare these dogs come from. |

Petsmarts partner with their local SPCAs to get animals adopted. They also help house them when the shelter runs out of room. |

The ones that were at the local petsmart here were from rescues....ARRF and Charmed Lifes. Both great rescues. |

Petsmart got too much flack for selling dogs and cats so they stopped quite awhile ago. They let rescues and shelters do adoptions there so they get foot traffic and good pr. They look good. But meanwhile they still support breeding mills and selling small animals. |

What's your point? They asked about Petsmart's adoptions. Yes, they host rescues and shelters but they still sell animals. Why is it okay to you that they sell rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc but not dogs or cats? |

Please show me where in here they asked anything about the adoption processes in general at Petsmart. This question seems VERY dog specific to me. It's not about what I think about small pets in pet stores it's about staying on topic. |

They asked about dog adoptions and where the dogs came from (if they are from breeders or rescues). I answered that. You are not a moderator and a newbie to boot. You have no right to tell people what to post or to tell others to stay on topic. |

I actually have had a very good experience with the rescues that adopt at petsmart. I have adopted one of my dogs through them as well as fostered through them. I can't speak for all of the rescue programs that frequent petsmarts but, the Tejas Pet Rescue (the rescue i worked with) awesome. They used petsmart soley as a means to find homes for their animals. People know that there are adoptable dogs there on the weekend, and if they don't know and they stop by, they still SEE them...and sometimes its love at first sight; like with me and one of my dogs. The lady I spoke with reccommended high quality dog foods and supplies....basically saying "I am not suppost to tell you this but...the stuff they sell here is junk." They helped me a great deal when I found a emaciated dog on the street. They paid for all her vet bills, and found her a absolutely wonderful family to live with. |

The poster asked where the dogs come from - the answer is local shelters and/or humane societies. And while that's great for the animals that find homes because of it, it's little more than a business ploy for them. And also while it's wonderful that they are no longer selling puppies and kittens, it's absolutely worth mentioning that they are still selling other animals. Whether or not you assign the same value to those animals is your business. But they are living creatures every bit worth mention that deserve better than to be treated and sold as stock. Paula who says the original poster deserves to be bombarded with propaganda? And since Rabbit insinuated something about my values I felt it highly appropriate to speak as I did. For a forum that has so many little nitpicking rules, it's amazing how many people make themselves out to be pompous.....well finish the sentence. Then again with all the posts that I read before joining I don't know why I'm surprised. |

I wonder why you felt the need to join if you saw how bad it was before doing so and this is something you "shouldn't be surprised" by. |

Exactly. You have to compromise your values to do adoptions there and recommend or get people to buy things at the store. Petsmart's rescues may have higher standards than the Petco ones but it's the same across board. The stores are still selling animals from breeding mills. These rescues or shelters are saying it is okay by showing up. Maybe you should read Guinea Pig Home - Social Cause Marketing - Articles It is not propoganda but fact that they sell animals from pet mills and backyard breeders. And look at the forum name. It's the kitchen. Read the disclaimer before entering. Crafty, I don't even know what you're talking about. Quote:

I joined because I want to do right by my pet and this is the most active and local of forums that I've seen. Many are active but based on the other side of the pond. I'm here for the express purpose of being a good fur-mama. No more and no less. I wouldn't DREAM of trying to befriend anyone here. |

And on a side note, I LOVE Petsmart. We save a good bit of money on cat supplues with the PetPerks and the Banfield Hospital company they joined up with several years back is amazing. Easy payment plans, wellness plans so that unexpected vet needs don't break the bank and locations everywhere. Most of the Banfields in my area have at least one vet with cavy experience and the act that they have so many means no matter where our family ends up we'll be covered. Their practices regarding small animals are deplorable but they have their purpose. |

I think my local Banfield is great too, but its not associated with PetSmart other than being in the same physical location. I know that there are lots of people that hate Banfields for it-and it definitely gets a bad reputation because its so nationally known and the bad experiences are far more talked about than the good ones-but I hate to see people associate the two especially when you associate your good experience with Banfield as being a good experience with PetSmart as a whole. There is no further need for explanations about why PetSmart is not a company that should be supported by pet lovers, because you'll do what you want to do until you can convince yourself otherwise. It appears to me that your concern for not veering off topic is what caused this thread to actually become a different topic altogether. A lot of the "nit-picky" rules here are just good common sense, just as attacking another poster with sarcasm will obviously inflame the conversation. |
