please forgive my horrible spelling i wrote that in a hurry PetSmart: H.R. 669 a serious threat - PetHobbyist.com Site Blog stop669.org - Don't Let Congress Take Your Pets! Read up and tell me what good this bill will do for all of us pet keepers. I don't mean to come off as a jerk but really.. even if you don't like reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, arachnids, rodent s or any other pet for that matter. How do you feel about our rights being taken away right from under our feet. No good will come of this. Regulations only lead to more regulations. |

Do you have guinea pigs? It doesn't sound like it. Quote:
Also you stated in a blatant exaggeration, that you've been bitten by guinea pigs. Guinea pigs just don't bite. Not without strong cause. So, the only thing I can think is you might have been bitten by a guinea pig whilst being fed to a reptile? |

Where does the HSUS use any of those words to describe reptiles? It does say they are very high maintenance, often exploited, and carry salmonella, which *some* people might be highly sensitive to. Nowhere on the HSUS website can you find a description of reptiles kept as pets that includes the terms disgusting, gross, or unhealthy. |

Oh, I have not been bittin by a guinea pig that I can recall. So I take the guinea pig out of the list I posted. I have never kept them either. But I have pet them at the local pet store they always seem to run though. I am here to help spread the word about H.R.669. I apologize if I have broken any rules by doing so. I will try and fix my previous post to make it correct according to grammar spelling. |

And I will also state that as the owner of this forum, I am NOT friendly towards keeping reptiles as pets--at all. You are looking at the wrong group to try to get support for snake/reptile breeders--if that is your mission. |

I do know about the H.R. 669 trying to take away our pets. I'm sure others don't want theres taken away as well. So I am trying to help everyone out. I don't see the harm in that. |

S/he reacted strongly against that webpage by HSUS, and I approve of that page, so, my bad. I should've said: "That is just BDB's intrepertation of what the HSUS has to say about pet reptiles." |

I see. For the record, I don't think reptiles should be kept as "pets" either, but that's not because I think they're vile creatures in any way. There's just no way people, generally speaking, can meet their true needs, and keeping them as pets just isn't fair to them. |

May I ask, what are their needs? Also, why we humans can't give them their needs? |

Once again I'd like to apologize for my poor spelling and grammar. To make up for it I have revised my original post. This post is for those that dislike reptile keeping. I can tell you I've been bittin by more rats, hamsters, rabbits, squirrels, and mice than by reptiles and amphibians. In fact my fingers have been chewed up by more hamsters alone than any other reptile or amphibian combined. Not to mention more people in this country die from mammals than reptiles. On the issue of becoming an invasive species. Your rodents are way more likely to became invasive than reptiles. 1. Rodents are warm blooded which means they can survive in many more places than reptiles can. 2. Rodents breed like...Rodents, hence the phrase. Most reptiles can only breed once a year. A hamster or mouse can pop out up to 10 or so babies a month. 3. Reptiles and amphibians prey on insects which can cause disaster for many farmers and people in the industry. Mammals feed on the foods farmers produce which would make them just as disasterous as insects. 4. If your rodents are so domesticated than why have I been bitten so many times by them? What does being domesticated have to do with anything? Just because they have fancy, colorful fur makes them less likely to be destructive? If you say they've been domesticated in the terms of temper I'd really beg to differ. Dogs and Cats are believed to be "domesticated". How many people get mauled every year by dogs? Do you know how many NATIVE reptiles, amphibians, and birds get killed and eaten by these "domestic" animals every year? Yes reptiles and amphibians can carry salmonella. How hard is it to wash your hands after handling them? Another thing, your rodents are mammals(obviously). With Rodents being mammals makes them more like us. The more similar we are the more diseases we can contract from them. I am not opposed to you all keeping rodents, but I do get offended by you claiming reptiles are "disgusting" and "unsuitable" pets. Keeping a reptile in a cage is no more or less cruel than keeping a mammal in a cage, domestic or not. Just because they're "domestic" doesn't mean they enjoy being locked up. You people are just expressing typical human nature. If you don't understand it than obviously you must fear it and destroy it right? I hope this pleases your requirements for proper spelling and grammar. Last edited by Kevin A; 04-20-09 at 04:39 pm. |

Once again, if this thread is going to turn into why keeping reptiles is a good thing, I'm just going to shut it down. I could really care less what you think about that. That's not what this forum is for. |

I don't see you saying my facts are false. I don't see anyone telling me how reptiles are supposed to be kept. How can you oppose something you don't comprehend? And Lastly HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT PETA AND THE HUMANE SOCIETY WHEN THEY ARE FIGHTING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR PETS? they won't care if you claim they are domestic or not the more they can ban the better they'll be. That's just more puppies and kitties they can rescue. Although thats if they don't ban kitties as well. Thank you for your time. |
