Re: 500 Cavies in CO need to be re-homed

Kittycat -

How much do you know about the USDA? Here is a statement taken directly from their website, regarding companion animals, such as guinea pigs ...

This site has been provided as a convenience to assist with issues related to companion animals. If you chose to contact us for further information, please note that regulation by USDA, under the Animal Welfare Act and its regulations does not apply to many problems related to companion animals. The Act covers the sale and exhibition of wild/exotic animals and the wholesale of pet animals; however, birds, rats, and mice are exempted, and dogs, cats and other animals have limited coverage. Cold blooded species, such as reptiles, are not regulated under the Act.

The USDA's protection of animals, through the Animal Welfare Act, deals with animals used as research. Pet stores, breeders, and such are regulated through the state governments.

Have you read the Animal Welfare Act?

So much for protection by the USDA.

Re: 500 Cavies in CO need to be re-homed

Being German, I know nothing about the USDA or the man who died but I have the slight feeling that he lost control over his caviary (hey, I just learned a new word!). Males and females together? Yes, they will breed, and breed fast, and no man can care for 500 animals alone. I won't even start on the topic of getting them to trust you - I have two piggies, and they require at least an hour of care every day and are STILL frightened. Now multiply this with 250, add the cage cleaning... no way.

With 500 GPs, this man wasn't a breeder, he was a mass producer. No matter what his original GP loving motives were.

On www.cavycareinc.com they mentioned the guinea pigs being fed rabbit food. That's outrageous!!! If he really cared about those pigs he would have at least provided them with BASIC care.
