Adopt a Guinea Pig: Squeaker: Petfinder This is the text from the ad - Squeaker is a 1 year old male White Crested guinea pig who has white and beige fur and brown eyes and weighs 2.2 pounds. He is closely bonded to his best buddy Phill (1 year old male Lionhead rabbit who has golden fur and brown eyes, weighs 4.19 pounds, is litterbox trained and will be neutered soon). They must be adopted together. They like people and enjoy being petted. They must be adopted to an inside home. The rabbit adoption fee is $40.00 and the GP adooption fee is $15 and includes free vet exams. Come out and meet our wonderful rabbits and guinea pigs. If you are interested in adopting one of our great rabbits or just want to learn more about rabbits as family pets, please come out to Greenhill and pick up a free rabbit care packet. Anybody have any ideas on how to get this place to realize rabbits and guinea pigs shouldn't live together, short of sending them a nasty email (check) or going down there and adopting the guinea pig and rabbit together? (I simply can't take in another pig right now and have no knowledge whatsoever of rabbits). It's also listed here, on the Greenhill Humane Society Page - Greenhill Humane Society. Scroll down to the very bottom. I figure if some people from here could email them with how irresponsible what they are proposing/allowing, maybe they'll wise up and at least house them in cages NEXT to each other. |

Adopt a Lionhead: Phill: Petfinder And here's the text from that - Phill is a 1 year old male Lionhead rabbit who has golden fur and brown eyes. Lionhead rabbits have an unusual look because of the longer fur around their head and neck, like a lion's mane. He weighs 4.19 pounds, is litterbox trained and will be neutered soon. He is closely bonded to his best buddy Squeaker (1 year old male GP, beige and white fur, brown eyes, weighs 2.2 pounds) and they must be adopted together. They both like people and enjoy being petted. **I'm posting these here in hopes some folks from this site might email them and let them know how terrible this is.** Last edited by Paula; 02-14-09 at 04:46 pm. |

That is just abhorrent (sp?). I'm going to send them an email too. Geeze, some people! |

Unfortunately some people think it is okay and that they are bonded, not better off with their own species. |

I just sent the first person on that list an email, and I think I might send it to the other names on that list of contacts too! I included this link in the email: http://www.guineapigcages.com/rabbits.htm |

Cool. Thanks. I'd go down and adopt them if I had any place for the bunny (not to mention any knowledge on how to care for them) but I just don't and can't right now. I know that some people think it's ok, but the idea that a humane society is adopting them out together and not making any mention whatsoever that bunnies and pigs shouldn't normally be housed together is ludicrous as far as I'm concerned. Ugh! Thanks folks. |

Maybe they just don't really know it is wrong. Just because they work there doesn't make them experts on all animals. They don't need to be jumped on immediately, offer them information first. I certainly didn't know better when I worked at the SPCA. I only learned after finding this site. Send them the info from here and the House Rabbit Society. House Rabbit Society Rabbit Care Guide |

I’ve said this before but I think it’s horrible to publicly encourage the harassment of anyone. Informative emails with sensible links go a lot further toward education than nasty ones from 15 different people. |

Adorable, are we really going to start this once again? I'm not even going to argue-I hate talking to a brick wall. I'm sending an email. Last edited by dra&pigs; 02-15-09 at 08:36 am. |

They obviously don't, or it's not likely they'd be doing it. Quote:
I'm not encouraging harrassment of anyone - in fact, I didn't post the email address for that very reason. I trust that people here have the good sense to go and find the contact information and act on it, and to those that have done so, thank you very much. I am encouraging education of these folks at Greenhill Humane Society so that hopefully they can correct this situation and know better in the future. |

Having worked at a Humane Society for years, I can tell you that there is so much other "noise" going on there, their priority is on getting animals into homes. Likely, whoever dropped those animals at the shelter left a note as to the "bond" and the workers are just passing it along. What the humane society needs, more than a bunch of bandwagon e-mails, is for people to volunteer to help at the shelter. Were you to go in there and see what happens on a daily basis, you'd have a better platform from which to preach the small animal gospel. At least they didn't just euthanize the animals. |

You can tell the story, ask for advice and give the contact info in private to just the people you know will help the cause. Yes, we have been through this before and, as I recall, the personal information was edited out because it was found to be inappropriate. |

As well it certainly should be. In this case, though, they are doing something that's dangerous and should not be encouraged. I certainly agree that shelters in general need more volunteers, but that's another issue and doesn't change the fact that this bunny and this guinea pig should be split for their own health and safety. |

We most certainly are not publicly encouraging the harassment of anyone. How you came up with that idea is beyond me. And its sad that starshine thanked you, becuase that means she feels the same way you do. So, to starshine: I ask you the same things I asked Adorable. What is your explanation for this irrational accusations? Paula, I praise you with everything I've got for what you're doing/did. If I were you, or it happened at my local humane society, I would do the same thing. I would hope that every other member on here would take the same actions that you have. |

Sophisticavy - Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it. Starshine didn't do anything but thank Adorable, and there's no harm in that, so probably should be left out of this. As for Adorable's input, to me the reason she opted to get involved in this thread is clear, and it didn't have anything at all to do with the best interests of the guinea pig or the rabbit in question here. Thank you to everyone who sees the problem here and has helped by sending emails. |

Would it be okay for me to tell that rescue Paula.M.Moore started a bashing thread here that they should check out? Anyone who reads this and is smart enough to click on the link can figure out how to contact them. Is it necessary to analyze who thanks who for whatever reason? Or is it just because you can't believe anyone would agree with me? |

I posted late but I'll just go along with Paula's idea that I don't care about pigs or rabbits. In fact, I hope she puts that place out of business so they can never take in another unwanted animal! |

Dear predictable Adorable, I knew you'd use that first comment as your justification to stir up trouble again. I posted the comment when I was highly miffed by what the shelter is doing with these animals. It wasn't encouragement for anyone to send anything to them except a note asking that the rabbit and guinea pig not be left together in the same cage. I regret that my choice of words there has given you yet another platform to start a fight. And, please if it makes you happy, do let them know that I've started a thread asking for support in getting them to separate the pig and the rabbit. I never bashed them as a shelter, only asked that they be contacted in regards to their choice to leave these two together despite all the reasons not to. THEY are no doubt smart enough to see that. |
