Angry Dog fighting

One word: Dog Fighting.
Dog fighting sickens me. I was just watching an Animal Cops Philadelphia and a person tied 8 dogs to 50 pd chains(Each dog was attached to a 50 pd chain). One dog has been euthinized because he broke the kennel he was in. There was blood everywhere. Boy, I wish I could just go up to that person and say how much of an inresponsible owner he is!
What's your opinion of Dog fighting?

That's two words.

And, ayuh, dog fighting is heinously cruel and horribly inhumane to to the dogs. And, yes, the owners who engage in it should be sent to prison for the duration of their lives. Or worse. Preferably worse.

Sorry, I I thought I spelled irresponsible and I meant two words, not one.

Um, definitely not a fan. I'm guessing that almost everyone on this site would be against it.

Although beyond horrific, the publicity surrounding Michael Vick's dog fighting sentence has finally allowed people to see the dogs trained to fight as what they really are...victims, not weapons.

Hopefully everyone on here is! And everyone in general should be.

I always watch Animal Precinct on Animal Planet, and never do you see the dog fighters keep the dogs well fed or taken care of (even if they did, it's still not OK). And you hear some of them say "the dogs love fighting", that really urkes me! Just because they do it, doesn't mean they enjoy it! APBT's love pleasing their owners, that's why they do it, and thats why they make such loving family pets. When you see a dog trained to fight, they are terrified of people because of the abuse they go through in the fights, they know their owners are responsible for!

Re: Dog fighting

Me and my husband just watched the episode you are refering to. My husband knew dogs that are trained like that are dangerous. But he was astonished at what that dog had done to the door on the truck and then again to the kennel inside.

Re: Dog fighting

I'm not entirely sure which episode you are talking about, as I have seen more than one about dog fighting (sadly). It sickens me. I don't see how anyone can think dog fighting is okay, and that dogs love to fight. Because they don't. They don't love to fight. They were made to fight like so by people like that. And when they are in the ring (or whatever you want to call it) "fight or flight" isn't an option. They have to fight.

First, let me say that I think dogfighting is DISGUSTING and that anyone caught doing it deserves massive jail time and anything else the court deems necessary as punishment. Let me also add I think Michael Vick should rot in H-E-double hockey sticks.

I just read a rather disturbing journal article for my deviant behavior class about dogmen and dogfighting. GPluver, you claim these dogs don't love to fight. After reading this article I must disagree. These dogs are specifically bred to fight and any dog that does not fight or train up to the breeder/trainers standards are either killed or given away. So, I suppose you are right in saying that not all dogs want to fight and esentially they are made to fight like that (but through breeding and some training), but the ones who don't do not get very far in their "career". Dogs who show more agressiveness or "promise" I would say are dogs who's bloodline led them to be natural born fighters.

Gameness (or the dogs willingness to fight to the death to win a match) is prized in these animals. A dog with no game or little "wind" (aka stamina) are called a cur (coward). The ultimate dog is called dead game or killer dog (willing to fight to death). I think the willingness implies that the breeder sees this natural instinct in the dog and merely hones it. Most dogs that actually make it to the fighting are somewhere in between, but I would deduce that for the dogman's profit he would lean more toward the dead game dog.

Even interviewees written about in the article mention that none of these dogs, cur or not (especially not) would make good pets. It's in them to fight.

However, I do not think that ALL APBT are natural born fighters/killers. I know a few and have heard about enough of them to know that they are sweet loving dogs. The dogs used in dogfighting however, are bred to have killer instincts. Anything less than that would mean a loss in money and/or reputation for the dogman.

Also, you mention fight or flight isn't an option. In a sense it is. There are four ways to end a dogfight. 1. A dog's failure to scratch (cross a line in the pit and attack the opponent dog in a given time), 2. the owner calling a fight, 3. death of one or both dogs and 4. a dog jumping the pit (literally jumping out of the ring).

Number four rarely happens though becasue that dog would be considered a cur dog and would most likely never make it to a fight in the first place. And, not that the dog would know this, a dog that does jump the pit will more than likely be killed by his owner for the humiliation he has faced. (Disgusting, I know.)

Re: Dog fighting

Paula, you're so funny!

Also, I think that everyone on here more likely than not is 100% opposed to dog fighting. Hopefully, the majority of the world's population feels the same!

Re: Dog fighting

Amazingly enough I even find it disgusting. I am not a fan of pit bulls but they should not be forced/trained/breed for fighting. It's just wrong.

Suprize

My opinion on Dog Fighting is the same for Cockfighting. It's blatant Cruelty to Animals. Humans who see no importance to animal life, all they care about is money. Often times they bring their own children to these horrific events, thus the kids usually grow up with the impression it's okay and that it will make mommy and daddy proud if their animal wins these fights for its life. These events typically go hand in hand with drugs and other illegal actions.

I personally love Pit Bulls. I followed the journey and rehabilitation of Michael Vick's fighting dogs. If anyone else watched the show DogTown on National Geographic, that's where they went (Best Friends Animal Sanctuary). I remember one of the dogs was completely rehabilitated and went on to become a therapy dog. Many of the Pit Bulls saved from a, no doubt, horrific death at Vick's fighting organization went on to live happy, normal, dog lives in family homes. Pit Bulls are very eager to please their masters, these cruel humans use it to their advantage.

Official American Pit Bull Site of Diane Jessup
Best website I have found that gives complete and historically accurate information about pit bulls. You'll learn a lot.
And dog fighting/abuse is only done by those who are cowards themselves.
