Just by glancing at the titles of these threads, it appears that breeding is frowned on? Should I NOT do that? I actually planned on buying a female (I mean, this thing won't live near as long as I will, and it wasn't cheap) so that the bloodline of Brother Pig could live on forever. Oh man... now I'm stumped. Kyle |

Oh man, I can tell where this is going so guys, lets intro this topic slowly. No, you should NOT breed. You put the sow at risk. There is a 20% chance of her dying just in labor and an even greater chance of her producing still borns or her rejecting the pups. Are you prepared to hand feed the pups ever hour so they survive and pay for the imense vet bill to save your sows life just so brother pig can live on? There is a HUGE over population of guinea pigs in the world. For every pig you buy or reproduce, two die in a shelter. Do you want to live with that? Your sow can have up to eight babies. Are you prepared to help her nurse and provide space for all of them when they grow up since the boys and girls need to be seperated at three weeks of age. What if she produces a lethal. She might have had a gene that didn't show up. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...inea-pigs.html Obviously you haven't seriously researched this idea if your just going to go out and buy a sow and plop them in with Brother Pig. Can I take a wild guess and say that somebody said that your pig was a show pig so you spent a ridiculous amount of money on it? And there are so many ways for you to get mor pigs. Like a shelter or someone who needs to rehome them. I really hope that youn decide to not breed. |

The philosophy is generally in disapproval of intentional breeding because no matter how you slice it, those babies are just more and more animals that will end up abandoned, dumped, or what have you. When rescues are working hard enough as it is to find loving homes for the animals they already have. Why would anyone intentionally add to the problem when they can be part of a solution? |

Wow... no, I have done no research, but with the numbers you gave me I don't think I'll breed them. Yet... One day, I plan to have my own yard, a large house, all that stuff that a man dreams of. Then, when I have the money, I'll turn the walls of the house into a nature deal, you know, all sorts of rodents, clear plastic tubes for ants (not connected in anyway to the rodents) and things like that, but thank you for all the information. No, nobody said it was a show pig, but if they had, I would have laughed at them. It's a rodent... no offense to the pig lovers, but a good portion of the world sees them as either pests or food. I paid forty something bucks at petsmart. When I called petsmart and said something about a female for him, those ... didn't say anything to me about the danger and all that!!! What's a lethal? Angry pigs? Maybe it's because I'm a young male... but man that sounds kinda cool! No, I have no intention of breeding one, or buying one. I'm someone childish, but quite responsable I assure you. I really do digress quite a bit, I apologize. Thanks again for the information. ... I really do want Brother Pig's bloodline to go on though. I guess I'll just go buy another male or two for him to hang out with. How do they do with smaller rodents, like dwarf hampsters and such? Kyle Last edited by Percy's Mom; 12-01-08 at 11:23 pm. Lethal is where a guinea pig is born with deformed limbs, malformed organs. For the most part lethal pups die. Lethal pups come from breeding 2 guinea pigs of a certain type to each other. |

Please read Guinea Lynx :: Breeding and Breeding Guinea Pigs Risk to the female and babies aside, there is a pet overpopulation problem. No one needs to be breeding. What are bloodlines really? Can you really tell with them? Personality is not inherited. Buying and breeding pet stores pigs (who are already highly inbred from their pet mills and whose genetics you know nothing about) is a bad idea. You may be breeding lines prone to heart disease and maloclussion. That's unethical and a lot of vet bills right there. Pet stores are there to make a buck. They aren't going to talk you out of buying from them. I'm sure your guinea pig would rather you adopt and save a life in his honor in lieu of risking a poor sow's life. |

I'm glad you've decided not to breed him. It would be great if you got him another male friend. Try to look into rescues, humane societies, craigslist, and petfinder first. If you buy another pig from the pet store, it is likely to be missexed, pregnant, and/or sick. Be sure to read up a bit on quarantine and introductions before you get another pig. Good luck! |

Guinea pigs are species specific animals. In my opinion all animals should stay with there own species. Hamsters will attack the guinea pig and rabbits can potentioly kill it. Guinea pigs need their own kind. Do not buy. Check out Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder for adoptable guinea pigs in your area. Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die. After all the numbers we've given you you say yet? Breeding guinea pigs EVER is a bad idea. All the money in the world sometimes can't save a lethal for sow having trouble giving birth. |

Yes, please do get yourself informed... before making any rash decisions as to breed your pigs, even if to extend the longevity lineage of your "brother pig". It would be wise to be armed with knowledge than with regrets further down the line... Regrets of the $$$$$ you are not prepared to spend on your "rodents" pet (which we know you are not as much of a cavy slaves as we are). Besides the babies, you do have to feed them down the line & have cash to care for each and every one... then if they in-turn have babies to carry on your "brother pig's" life... well its 'brother-pig" all the way, so you have better not kill that precious lineage when you do start! Regrets of maybe inheriting as much as 70 guinea pigs (a rescue just had to save 70 ++ GPs from another un-informed person who just wanted to try breeding) you are unplanned for due to your lack of research what breeding guinea pigs would bring. Yes, guinea pig if you do your research are like rodents, they reproduce alot & very quickly too. Ask yourself even if you like your wealth (when you do accumulate your millions) if you would like to "down grade" & live in a farm/barn with 70 ++ GPs on top of other animals you are planning to own. If you are a dedicated farmer type person... then yes you may actually be capable of handling breeding thy rodents after you have amassed that cash capability to do so. --------------------------------------------------------- P.S. you actually do need the passion & dedication to be a willing slave to all your "pet animals" on top of that farm & cash qualification... or that 'brother pig" lineage will still not carry on but be another old & forgotten abuse story... So please chose your actions responsibly! And I am glad you did! |

No guinea pigs can only be housed with other guinea pigs. Species should never mix (excluding birds in a large avairy). |

Welcome to GPC! I ditto what everyone else has said and am glad you have decided not to breed. Also, if you do get a friend, another male will be fine, or you can neuter Brother Pig and get a female. But whatever you do, ADOPT don't buy. Check out Ly&pigs diet and nutrition chart so that you can give the right amount of veggies everyday. Make sure they have good quality hay, Kleenmamas and Oxbow are the best. The same goes for their pellets. Oxbow, Kleenmamas, sweet meadow, and Mazuri are the best. No Kaytee, no Hartz, no Zupreem. You can get Oxbow at PetSmart, but I personally frown upon buying such a wonderful product from such an awful place. Try and find it at a feed store that doesn't sell animals instead, or buy it online. Buying online in bulk is cheaper anyway, even WITH shipping. |

But I do not think this forum give that option even if you aren't a newbie, a moderator may have the privilege. And I do so enjoy many literally works & words even if English is not my first language & my grammar sucks (at least I admit it). |

Gotta love off topic discussion. I haven't noticed any problem with your english. What is your primary language, if I may ask. |

Fist language is Chinese. I can also converse in 2 other different Chinese dialect (Cantonese & Hokkein). Took Japanese in secondary school & German in college but I have forgotten a bunch due to lack of practice. Anyways, welcome to GPC & do enjoy this site. It is a great site for info access on your GP. P.S. Its always good to have someone lighten the mood of this forum even if for a bit. Last edited by hueyeats; 12-01-08 at 10:02 pm. Reason: Add |
