Lightbulb Very interesting

I stopped in Petco yesterday Since we were by there & of course checked on the pig's & there were sign's on the cage's That said "Please Adopt before you buy here, Please go to petfinder.com"
& every couple of minute's on the radio there were "ads" saying petco supports petfinder Please go there for your next pet"
I was alittle shocked, Anyone else see these in there petco?

Re: Very interesting

Well, if they want you to adopt, why are they selling the piggies then?? (Not directing the anger at you Missginger, only PetNo) Doesn't make sense to me. I will have to check out the PetCo here in KY next time I go by there and see if they have the signs too.

HUGE pet peeve of mine. Call them on it. My area Petco started offering the shelter pigs in the store eventually.

Re: Very interesting

I check things out every once in a while because I volunteered with the mn rabbit society and they display adoptable rabbits only in my local stores.
Anyways, I always check to see the status of the piggies as well.
I saw a piggie up for adoption that was not an originally store bought pig return. It still made me mad because the poor piggie was in a small aquarium on display, and the water bottle was not to my personal standards for a guinea. (small and oddly shaped)

Re: Very interesting

I know my local Petco have an adoption day every Sunday efforts in conjunction with the local shelter. I think they are a bit better than Petsmart in that way.... but as long as they sell "mill-bred" animals, I would agree it is still bad.

I went to their beta section to look for another beta for my DH for his office & we can barely find a beta that even looks "decent". It is worse at Petsmart... the beta all look sickly!

Re: Very interesting

It's a scam to make them look good while they still sell milled animals.

Do't buy fish from them. There fish are just like their piggies and just because they are "fish" doesn't mean they should be overlooked. If your going to get a fish buy one from a VERY fish friendly store. DO your research on fish stores first though.

Re: Very interesting

fish are all mass bred. Adopt a fish! Look on craigslist for people looking to get rid of their fish. Betta fish were always being given away on craigslist where i used to live. And remember, they should kept in at least a 5 gallon tank (10 gallon preferred, no tiny bowls or cups) with plenty of plants/hiding places. Oh, and they can be kept with other fish too, its a myth to say they will attack and kill ALL other fish. They only go after other bettas.

I have some bettas available for adoption, as well as many other fish. I take in unwanted aquatic critters. Please dont support Petco/Petsmart in any way.

Re: Very interesting

I have been corresponding with the VP of Petco and he also is the director of the Petco Foundation (two seperate entities). He seems to genuinely think that they need to stop selling animals. BUT the problem is that there are no rescues that can provide animals for them to have for people to adopt. They have test marketed certain areas and not sold animals and people would literally walk in and not see animals so they would walk out because of it. It acutally hurt the store to not have the animals in the store. It seems that "normal" or "general" people want to see animals in the stores regardless of how they are treated.

He says that if there are rescues willing to have animals in the stores than those stores would stop selling the guinea pigs. I am also working with him on changing the way they house, care for, and treat the guinea pigs. I have talked to him numerous times so maybe we as a guinea pig community can get somewhere with this.

I have pointed out numerous things that are on here and I hope he takes everything into consideration. I will also be contacting some of you that rescue and won't shop at the stores because they sell the animals. I really think we can help change things in the stores and hopefully work with the stores and not against them to do this.

Good idea... actually great idea!
I got the beta from a specialty aquarium & fish store that sell only fresh water & salt water fishes.

Both Petco & Petsmart's betas and other fishes are like their pets, very sickly. Yikes.

Re: Very interesting

I've seen numerous ads on Petfinder saything the pig is stationed in a certain Petco location. So my assumption is that certain Petco locations truely adopts out pigs because it's not just young or baby ones I've seen on there, it's adults as well.

I would post one but it'll take me a minute to find one, when I do I'll post it.

Re: Very interesting

Well the pig I was specifically looking for I cant seem to find at this moment, but I decided to go to Petco's website and look at pet adoptions and look what I found

Think Adoption First at PETCO

I guess they really have teamed up to support adoption!!!
