I'm a long time member of a beardie forum and was getting ready to order my roaches to start my own colony for a beardie. A couple of days before pay day (when I was going to order them), my sister called me to tell me that her guinea pig had babies, and could I please take one in a few weeks. So I joined up here right away to take a crash course on guinea pigs and got Rumpy instead of my dragon. Funny how things turn out, isn't it? Now I've got 5 piggies, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Re: Geckos

Well I hope you don't mean adult hissers because there shells are too tough I recomend feeding younger roaches and cutting adults in half and taking off the legs to make it easier on your beardie. I think its best to keep a beardie on worms, crickets,& veggies mostly but people have had success with roaches also don't forget uvb & vitamin supplements(I recomend reptivite)I've never had a beardie infact my sav is about to go to nothing but meats since hes approaching the 2ft mark so I can't say much about diet but beardies also eat pinkie mice its a good treat I give my sav one every now and again.

Re: Geckos

I was going to use turks. Their flesh/chitin ratio is fine for beardies. Roaches are a lot healthier than crickets. The only worms you can use as a staple are silk worms, and they're not easy to raise and are expensive to buy. Pinkie mice should never be fed to a beardie. They should only get insects, fruits, and veggies.

Well gut loaded crickets are best raw potatoe justs gives moisture thats it I use gut load its very popular. Beardies do eat the occasional pinkie. You can also feed wax worms & meal worms withoout the black shell. And remember to keep the diet varied.

Re: Geckos

Crickets have virtually no nutrition themselves. Just the gut load. Roaches have better nutrition, and you should feed them the same things the beardies eat. Beardies should NEVER be given meal worms. And wax worms only like 1 or 2 a month, if ever. They'll get addicted to them to the point where they'll refuse all other food. And just because a beardie will eat a pinky, doesn't mean that they should. It's too high in fat and can cause impaction.

Re: Geckos

A healthy gut loaded cricket is great nutrition I know many people who have kept there beardies on mealies, salads, occasional pinkie, and gut loaded crickets and they've all raised healthy beardies. Only adults should be offered pinkies remember the rule prey not much longer than the space between the eyes. Addicted to wax worms I've only heard of that happening with chamelions but I know waxes can be offered once a week. The site your using might be alittle old then again there are many things that will vary with each keeper.

Re: Geckos

I'm having great luck with Blaptica dubia roaches: non-climbing, non-flying viviparous and sexually dimorphic. I do feel a bit bad feeding them to my geckos, though. They have their little personalities and almost societies. It's sort of sad seeing them eaten. But they are healthier for the geckos than the mealies, and easier to maintain adequate numbers of. Though reading over the last few sentences... I don't think I ever thought that I would be having warm and fuzzy feelings about roaches of all things...

Re: Geckos

HaHaHa!! Yeah, as I was getting ready to order mine, I was thinking to myself, "I can't believe that I'm actually paying money to have roaches in my house!" I had decided against the dubias just because they were more expensive and slower breeders. They're a good feeder, though. I had decided on turks instead of lobsters because of the whole climbing issue.

I feed my beardie crickets...which he now refuses to eat, superworms, wax worms and salads. He goes through picky spells where he will eat just one thing and sometimes not eat for a couple days.

Yes, they can get addicted to wax worms and he has. He was getting to the point where he wouldn't eat anything else so we stopped giving it to him and kept offering other food. They can also get addicted to hand feeding even though some people think it's a great bonding tool but it's not so great when they stop eating on their own.

Pinkies can cause aggression in all lizards but mostly beardies. I've seen this happen to beardies and Gecko's. They shouldn't be fed and there is no need to given they have plenty of other healthy options that won't make them aggressive.

Re: Geckos

Enough with the live/frozen, insect/rodent reptile food comparissons. This forum is not about reptiles and other wild animals and their dietay needs. If you all want to discuss the proper feeding of reptiles then I suggest you find a more appropriate forum for it.
