Unhappy

Hi guys this is me having a little rant. Today i went to my local rescue home as i am looking for a new gp. I went round all the animals and do you know what 90% pf peoples excuses for handing in there animals were because they were having a baby! Thats no excuse as far as im concerned i have a daughter and kept my cat and hamster throughout. Sadly my hamster eric has passed on he had a good innings though living for 3 years. But thats the really annoying thing there were hamsters in there at nearly two years old being given up because there owner was having a baby. I know all about the toxins rabbits carry that can harm unborn babies but if you love your pet why not get someone else to clean it out and do it all till you have given birth. As i was leaving there were to children crying as there parents handed over there pet dog that was out of control ever heard of traing? Why do people bother if they arent willing to put in the work and dedication it takes to own a animal its worth it for all the love you get back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry i also have to add that it says all over the place the minimum cage size for two is two ft by 4 ft but the animals at my local rescue were in tiny little hutches and as we live in lovely rainy britian i take thay dont get much floor time. So surely they are being cruel to them in the long run as the small animals stay at the shelter for a long time and it takes over 3 months to adopt according to the women i spoke to.

Re: What short of excuse is that?

I agree no excuse if you get a animal you get it for life not until you get tired of it or it becomes inconvenient for you.

Re: What short of excuse is that?

I agree, but unfortunately I have had to find a german shepherd dog that I purchased a new home. I got him and already had another dog in my house (which I still have, Dodger turns 7 next May). The dogs got along great, but being that the GSD was young he chewed everything. Destroyed is more like it. He ate the paneling off the walls, chewed the cable cord, broke windows by jumping on them, and destroyed a couch (the first two he did when he was in his kennel). He went to live on my best friend's father's farm. The dog needed room to run and my friend's dad needed a dog to guard his property. I think he just wanted a dog for companionship though, and the only dog he ever owned were GSDs. I see the dog on a regular basis, and the dog and farmer are inseparable. The dog even tears everything up on the farm. He drags 5 gallon buckets out of the barn (some still filled with oil) and chews those up. He even ate the tire cover off of the RV. I was simply heart broken that I had to get rid of him, but the beast could not be contained in a house. Since then I have fostered my step-sister's dog and found a perfect home for it. I also dogsit friends' and families dogs quite frequintly. Giving the GSD away to someone that I knew would take care of him does not make me a bad person. I believe I had a logical reason to do so. You better bet when I have a baby, Dodger (my dog) and Gizmo (my Guinea Pig) will not be going anywhere.

I just want to clarify that it's not 2ftX4ft, but 2 grids by 4 grids. The average sized grid is 14" square, so it's larger than 2ftX4ft.

Re: What short of excuse is that?

Over here, in the UK, a very well known rescue recommends cage minimum of is 4ft x 2ft (no mention of the C&C cages - things are different over here) - our local well known rescue does not even give their guinea's veg!

Re: What short of excuse is that?

Yes i believe 90% of the rescue places recommend 2ft by 4ft cages. What i dont understand though is the gps and rabbits they take in live in much smaller cages in pairs and do not seem to get much floor time in runs etc. I was very shocked at the size of the cages as well as the state of them. My local rescue had plenty of runs that had been donated but they were selling these rather than using them. And as the person who posted before me stated they do not feed veg and fruit. I asked for health care advice whilst there as this would indicate what short of diet a gp i may adopt was recieving and the only fresh food they recommended was wild plants. I was concerned to hear this as the gps in there care are in hutches all day. It makes me so mad as to adopt i have to undergo a home check for which i have to hide my cat even though he doesnt go near my current gps as they will not rehome if you have an indoor cat. It also worried me that i was told the process can take upto 3months or more and the gp would be going without fresh food for that long would probably mean poor health. Im just so mad because i want to rescue but also dont want my gp becoming anymore depressed because she is lonely. aaaaaaaaaaaaah Sorry once again i am ranting but its only because they arent looking after the gps properly and i feel im offering a really good home im home almost 24 hours a day because i have a young daughter and the pigs have plenty of interaction and lots of floor time which i can do on there terms because i am around they come out when they are active in there cages.

Re: What short of excuse is that?

Oh Charlie you have described my local rescue to a tea! (although admittedly they are in slightly larger cages) but they receive NO veg or grass! Instead they are fed on guinea excell and hay.
The other difference is that the rescue I got my pigs from did not even do a home check. I was just required to take a picture of the cage in when I collected them two weeks after choosing them (the two weeks was only cause I pointed out to them that they had mites!) One of the pigs was soooo underweight you could feel all her ribs and spine - so I fully understand your frustration when you are offering a far better home then that in the rescue home!

Re: What short of excuse is that?

Thanks for the above reply makes me feel abit better as was starting to think i was abit looney. Did you get your pigs from animal life line in surrey? I have spoken to them and they only require a picture of the cage and proof of ID. They dont have anything for me and the moment though as they pair them up and i only wont the one. Currently trying to presuade my hubby to take on two to make it easier.
