Smile Does this sound like a bad pet store?

A few months ago I was on work experience at a pet store. called Wilsons Pet Centres, website: :::: Wilsons Pet Centres ::::

As I was working with the animals, They only sold small animals eg: guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, fish, birds, etc
and in the hamster cages they only had max of 2 serian hamsters or 4 chinese/russian hamsters in cages with a lot of space to roam

The guinea pig and rabbit runs had a 2 story hutch and a big run with toys,

Bird averies only had to maximum or 8 small birds or 4 medium sized birds

I was talking to the animal supervisor and I asked what they did with the sick, ones people dident want or to old,

and she said, if the animal is sick they go into an isolation room in there own cage witch they still can move around and nursed back to health and put in there own cage on the store floor,

For the animals people dont want they still keep in the store and reduce the price which gives them no profit at all for that animal it only covers the price for feeding and what price they bought it at from there supplier

And they do the same with the to old animals aswell,

When they buy life stock they check all there suppliers on how the animals are raised and looked after and they do not buy animals from random people who come in trying to sell animals

Does this sound like a bad pet store like petsmart or pets at home?

Yes, they sell animals.

What makes it okay for them to sell small animals and exotics but not okay to sell dogs and cats?

If they sell animals, then yes. If there are animals almost 100% of the time they come from breeders, which is bad.
I have hardly ever heard of a petstore that is good.

Re: Does this sound like a bad pet store?

Are small animals not animals? They are, which means they still sell animals. Looking at that website, the guinea pig page features a pig with overgrown nails, and advertises them as childrens' pets. It has tonnes of false care info (males will fight together, keep the pigs in small hutches/store bought cages, recommend keeping pigs and buns together, vitamin drops, the list goes on). Yes, I'd say they're still a bad pet store. The only 'good' pet stores are the ones that don't sell animals.

Re: Does this sound like a bad pet store?

Pet stores are sick because MANY of them have breeding mills.

The way they house their animals, which is often very poorly, just adds to more of the issues pet stores have. It's not a wonderfull thing that a pet store actually houses their animals properly. It's sad that people have come to the point where it's amazing if they actually do, when it should be already expected.

There is a pet store near me which only sells animals stuff eg: hay, toys and the rest and they have partnered with the RSPCA charity shop next door and they help to get people to adopt animals from shelters rather than buy them from pet stores

If they really want people to adopt homeless animals, they wouldn't be selling the cute little baby animals. Kind of like PetSmart's 'Think Adoption First' is all just to create a caring image.

Is it possible to order online?

Two serians? As in syrian/teddy bear hamsters? As in the breed that is solitary and should only be housed one hamster to a cage because they are so territorial that they will kill another hamster sharing the same space?

I think you get my point.

Re: Does this sound like a bad pet store?

It doesn't matter if the petstore is clean, if they feed the critters the right stuff or they are loved to pieces everyday. The problem with petstores is the breeding, the selling of animals for profit. If one is sold more is replaced. IT'S THE BREEDING! It's that shelter animals die or do not get a home at a rescue every time an animal is bought from a petstore. It keeps breeding and backyard breeding alive and prospering. That is what we all want stopped!! Let a petstore sell supplies but NO ANIMALS!!
