Was this directed to me? Or ilovebabe? I'm not sure, but this is my answer. I buy everything in bulk. My hay which lasts literally months, My pellets I get in 50 lbs but only last 1-2 months, my bedding(Bigger than the PetsMart and Petco bedding) for $6 which lasts about 1-2 months and I usually get 2 or 3. My hay is $4.75, my pellets are $18.00(healthy pellets, not the crap Mazuri, Hartz, Kaytee, ect) and the vet bills.. Eh, don't really know the price. It all does add up if you don't go to the right place and such. If you look in my supplies you will see how big my things are for such low prices.

Re: Little Cage

Oh ok, Susan? Yeah, Susan, you should order pellets from www.oxbowhay.com because believe it or not, a 50 lb bag is ONLY 20 bucks! I couldn't believe it whenever I saw it, I was in AWE! It's awesome, . Just get bales of hay from farms or FEED stores. The bales are usually really cheap. Oxbow, my personal opinion, is quite expensive on the hay. Also, bedding, KILN DREID PINE is Ok. I use it, and it smells just like aspen, wood smell, no oils or anything. That's the cheapest safe bedding that I can get.

What did she do with them all? And, just because she got lucky doesn't mean that you will. Besides, you're just killing homeless cavies.

Re: Little Cage

She could have just adopted a bunch and saved lives rather than bringing more into the world.

Re: Little Cage

It's so nice to know she "keeped" her cavies. It's so nice to know such an educated person is bringing more lives into this world.

Re: Little Cage

So was your aunt extremely rich or how could she afford to keeped all those babies?
Did the cage take up her whole house? (Just wondering) Or did they just run around everywhere?

Hey, thanks for the info on the oxbow stuff - I have actually been looking for places to buy stuff in bulk. We do spend a tremendous amount of money on our animals, which is partly my fault because I tend to spoil them. We have more pets than just guinea pigs, too ... we have 11 guinea pigs, 4 chinchillas, 2 hamsters, a cat, and a dog. Until just a week or so ago, I was using CareFresh bedding, but that got so expensive (which is part of the $1000 a month we were spending). For all the cages, it took about 6 bags of the 50-liter CareFresh ... major $$$$$! Plus, the food for the pigs and chinchillas (I have found some chinchilla food in bulk, thankfully), and chew toys for everyone and exercise stuff for the chins and fresh veggies and cat litter and cat food and dog food and treats and it seems like someone is always needing a new hiding house or new bed or new water bottle or new food dish ... <sigh> It's a pricey thing, owning so many animals. But I've switched to aspen bedding, which is much cheaper, and I've been buying the chin food in bulk, and now I"ll try out the guinea pig food in bulk and I'll look around for hay at a feed store. So hopefully that will lower my costs tremendously. Thanks so much - you guys are the best!

Re: Little Cage

Ilovebabe I don't think you should breed mainly because you are under 18 and not even old enough to get a job. What is going to happen when your parents decide they don't want to fund your "breeding business" anymore? And don't say you are only going to have one litter because some how you will end up with more than one litter. Accidents happen. What happens when you can't find homes for the babies, and your parents won't let you keep any more because of cost etc?
You need to seriously think about how you (not your parents because I can almost garuntee they will get tired of paying for your pets) are going to be able to pay for all these cavies, when you are not even old enought to get a job. Or even help pay for the cost.
What happens if one of the cavies needs to see a vet immediatly for a URI or something, and its the third emergency vet check in the last month?

What happens when school gets harder as you get older, and you don't have time to care for all those cavies? Do you think your parents are really going to want to?
{About the question above^ I know that some people do fine taking care of their cavies while in school, but it is something to think about, esp. if y
