Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

I keep every scrap of coroplast and only throw away the smallest of pieces. If you look at pictures of all of my cages, you will see that they are pieced together. In fact, in my cage building thread I show that I had to add some coroplast when I rebuilt it.

For the travel cage I just made I had 2 pieces that were the size of a grid and then it took 6 pieces that were the width of the grid and 6 inches high for the sides. And I did the same for the 2x4 quarantine cage. They don't necessarily fit together perfect and I needed to do some trimming but with plenty of packing tape it does the job. I have never had any problem with leaking. I just make sure to use plenty of tape.

The smallest piece I have used is 1 inch by 3 inch that I covered with fleece and put on my ramps for treads.

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

I spent.. rather a lot on my C&C but only because it is also on a large 3x6ft rolling table with storage underneath, and a wood frame base to keep it sturdy. In total I spent $20 for grids + $25 for coroplast. With the table, wood material, fleece, towels.. Well over $300. However, you could make a quick, easy and large C&C for as little as $50.

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

Mine has a big Super Pet Multi level home right now, Its pretty big, I can't remember the dimensions though, I really want to build a C&C cage! Looking at how big most of these cages are, the one I have seems tiny! Here is a link to a pic of the cage I have:Amazon.com: Super Pet Deluxe My First Home (multi floor large, blue base 30''x18''x29''): Home & Garden
Is that a big enough cage? The only difference is, the middle level on the one I have doesn't have a hole in it.

Thats nowhere near big enough...it looks like it's more designed for rats, and even then it wouldnt be ideal for rats It also looks pretty dangerous for pigs, they could easily fall from those levels. I would definatly get a C&C cage asap...it's more important for pigs to have horizontal space rather than verticle...their ground dwellers..

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

guineapigluvr1 do you have a target or Kmart near you? Somewhere that you can get the grids at? If so, the box of grids does not cost money and you could go get a box so you can at least make a temporary floor time cage for them in your room. You would need to put down a plastic shower curtain liner, they are really cheap, under $5.00 and then put an old blanket on top of that. Then you would put down all of the toys, hideys, food, water, hay (put hay in a rack or some sort of box so it does not make a mess). You could put your pig down in this floor time area any time you want and just clean it all up when you are done. It would be better than leaving your pig in that small cage all the time and maybe when your parents see your pig acting happier they might want to go for the c&c cage!

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

Ok! My dad said maybe we will build one in a month or two. I wish we could sooner, I'm going to take out the levels so she can't get hurt, and just make sure she gets plenty of time out of her cage until I can do that!

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

I wouldn't panick too much, just keep insisting with you're dad and make sure he doesn't forget. Maybe show him the site and show him how people have built the cages with ease and not much expence? ( I would keep away from the UK section there haha )

Like you said, just make sure until you can build her a C&C cage she gets plently of floor time, and shes safe. It's all you can do for now. You clearly care about you're pig..

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

OK, thanks! I will keep asking him! I'm sure he'll do it soon! I'll make sure she has tons of floor time, and is safe! Also I was looking at the plans for them, and are thier any that have a top on it? Because we have three kittens. Luckily are dogs are outside!

Re: Improvement on Pet-store cages?

Ok thanks! My bedroom isn't situated very well, you have to go through it to get to my sisters bedroom, so I have to leave my door open at night, because the kittens sleep with her, so...but at least we'll be moving soon, and I can get a better bedroom, so I don't have to worry about that!
