Pet shop prices

when i got my girls from woodlands adventure park 6 years ago we payed £6 each for them. the 4 we had before came from a pet shop and cost £8, now, looking in a local shop, they are selling males for £20 and females for £40. im not sure whats going on, are they really worth that much now or is it just the shop being stupid? any ideas?

Re: Pet shop prices

I think the shop is just crazy. 5 years ago when I got my first pig she was 30 dollars and in the past 5 years the pigs are now 32 dollars. I think the shop you went to is crazy it's like either they want people to adopt pigs or they aren't making enough money off of them.

Please dont get your pigs from a petshop, if you already have its okay its too late but if you are getting more please rescue them, there are so many homeless Guinea Pigs out there, also petshops support breeding mills (imagine a puppy mill but instead of dogs, its guinea pigs) they also support ireasoncible breeding and dont care for there animals well, they have them in small smelly cages and ushally not divinde into sexes very well, tey fed bad food no hay and no veggies and thats what they teach the new owners to do. They incourge you to buy too small of cages and bad toys that could ingure and kill them (ie. an excercse ball) and if one of there animals get sick or injured most of them time they'd rather kill it or let it die becuase its cheaper just to order a new one than save the one they already had. And all around its just the right thing to do, also most the of members here are very against petshops (and breeders too), just to warn you.

Re: Pet shop prices

Yes I know, I don't buy from pet shops, I was just there getting food and stuff and was just looking at them and wondered what was going on. Im going to try and rescue one after Xmas, as i have an old female by herself who's pining since she lost her sister. Theres not much point before Xmas as apparently they don't re home anything for a couple of weeks before and after. and I worked in a pet shop for a while back when I was at college and they weren't to bad but they didn't feed veggies for some reason, they had Vit C problems all the time. I think some of the problem was they where kept in with rabbits that couldn't have to much veggies so they couldn't give it to the pigs.

Re: Pet shop prices

You're still supporting the pet shop if you buy supplies from there. And that isn't the only problem with your pet store.

Re: Pet shop prices

Personally I think it's a great idea to hike the prices, it discourages people from making impulse buys. Even so, I still object to them selling animals regardless of cost.

Re: Pet shop prices

Zesty was $5 to save from Animal Control. They looked at me like I was crazy for taking a guinea pig to the vet, and said "But they are only $5, just get another one!" As if it was pure economics.

I think about that moment regularly when I watch Zesty bound across the living room carpet with romaine leaf hanging out of her snout.

Just saying!

Re: Pet shop prices

I dont have any choice but to get the food from the store. Were else am I supposed to get it from? That one with the pigs is miles away and we only went there cos it was on the way back home and we decided to have a look and a laugh at there prices. I used to get food from a shop that dont sell animals but we have moved to a different city recently and thats all there is around here, they all sell animals. And i know that isnt the only issue with the shop. Personally i dont like the place, they keep spiders in tiny little cricket boxes and I have heard they dont have the papers for some of their tortoises or at least not a few years ago.

Re: Pet shop prices

I am absolutely mortified. I went into our petstore in the mall to check up on some sick piggies I have recently seen in the store. I looked at the pigs and there was at least 9 in a maybe 2x2 at best! They were boy and girl mixed with only 1 pigloo and no food or water. Mind I couldn't see there was so many pigs. Anyway, so I'm not completly off topic, they were selling them for $5.00. There was a beautiful all black boar that was so cute! I didn't buy him but if it wasn't for you guys, I would now have 3 pigs.

Re: Pet shop prices

I was in Pets-not-so-smart the other day. I hated goin gin there but I was at the Michael's next door and had to use the restroom...they didn't have one. Anyway....on my way out of Pets-not-so-smart I walked by the piggies. My daughter was with me and she just shook her head. She went up and asked for the manager. He met us at the piggies and she asked him, that since it is Christmas, could she please give the piggies more hay (they had none), and could she give them some veggies (we had just gone to the veggie store). I was surprised when he actually said yes. He even let her go back and and give it to them herself. You should have seen them gobble it up. On our way out he asked me why it was so important to her. I told him we were with a rescue and she just couldn't stand to see them without the right food.

Oh...by the way...they were $40.

Re: Pet shop prices

Guinea pigs usually cost $25-35 here in stores. At a shelter about 30 minutes from here, I could get them for $10 if I really wanted to get more, and they had some that day.

Re: Pet shop prices

Yeah, i got mine for $35 at Petco before I knew any better. Chester from the SPCA was a "We never get guinea pigs, so theres no set apodtion fee, but you can donate if you want" So we payed $10.

Re: Pet shop prices

At the Humane Society near me, the guinea pigs are in the cat room, too. They aren't with the cats, though.
