Re: I'd like opinions please

Well i'm glad there're doing that! I know you work for one of the better petcos (even though there is far and few, there are some good ones who acutally care for their animals)

I wish I could say that petsmart is shrinking but there're doing the complete opposite. We now have 244 bettas in our store and its becoming overwhelming for our petcare department. I'm hoping that I can be out of there by the end of next year, but in the mean time, I (as you are) am doing all I can to help our guys out Keep up the good work!

Re: I'd like opinions please

I'm in Wisconsin too! What city is this Petco in?

I know some Petcos have programs to house rabbits and other small and fuzzies from local shelters, and this has literally saved a lot of lives over in Eau Claire which used to euth rabbits all the time. I say get rid of the mill-bred animals and keep shelter animals instead, as long as the shelter still reviews people before they adopt. I know some shelters that do this type of program don't bother.

Re: I'd like opinions please

Yes this is encouraging news, however, I can see one problem with Petco taking in adoption animals (exclusively). Some adoption animals relinquished to shelters need medical care. I know they get turned in with contagious skin diseases, fleas, malnourished, etc. Although Petco's animals are mill animals, they come in flea/tick/mite free (almost always). I don't know if Petco would be willing to invest in resources that the humane societies have in place. Vets on staff, etc.

Re: I'd like opinions please

I know with my shelter's cat program at Petsmart, they only send healthy, parasite-free cats that have already been checked by their vet. The shelter still does all the work of accepting, vet-checking, and spay/neutering their animals, Petsmart just displays them.

Petco does have grants for rescues that work with them too. It pays for the spay/neuter of rabbits at the Eau Claire shelter that are displayed there, which is great because that shelter didn't spay/neuter it's rabbits before this.

It's something to look into. I don't know how it gets started, I think maybe the shelter has to initiate it.

That's wonderful! I feel horrible for those poor keets though! Parakeets and Paralettes are my favorite parrots ever.

Re: I'd like opinions please

A local pet co or pet smart (I cant remember which) made a deal with our animal shelter that they will stop selling animals and just take in ones from the shelter to adopt out. They are taking small animals, cats and I think birds so now even an impulse buy is saving an animals life and the shelter has more room for other animals who need it.

That's great, but they probably don't have adoption applications or correct information.

Re: I'd like opinions please

On occasion I stop into Petco if I need something short notice. I was saddened to see that they are selling both male and female GP's, as well as Rabbits and Ferrets (and the usual small animals such as mice, gerbils, hamsters, etc.) - Atleast before they didn't sell female GP's

I talked with a guy who works there, and he said when he got his GP (through Petco) he had them "ship her" completely seperate from the other "shipments"; I was disturbed - for one, I got a horrible visual of those poor piggies together in a truck packed like crates of eggs. But then I got even more disturbed that he had them "ship her" completely seperate. If he had a problem with it, I can only imagine what it's really like (but, prefer not to!)

Re: I'd like opinions please

At Pet Supplies Plus, they keep their guinea pigs together and don't know if they're males or females! Talk about a disaster that is waiting to happen and probably already has!
