Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) Does anyone else have lots of complaints about Petsmart? The Petsmart in Lexington Kentucky should be named Petstupid! I recently looked at there guinea pigs, and there was like 6 or 7 in a VERY small cage. That should be against the law. Also there prices are ridiculas compared to prices online. Is this against the law? Can anything be done about this? They should not be allowed to have so many guinea pigs in such a small cage. They was also giving advice on how putting guinea pigs in a 75 gallon tank would be fine! I looked at them and told them where did they get there information from, and they just started talking about something else. A aquarium is the WORST thing to put a guinea pig in. I am very thankful for this site showing the proper set ups for guinea pigs. I currently have 3 sows in a 2X4 C&C cage, and tomorrow I'm either making a 3X4, or a 3X5. I would love to here opinions on this matter! thanks so much!

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) My Petstupid here usually has about three guinea pigs in a ten gallon tank. No hay, seeded foods, salt licks, and vitamin C in their water. Unfortunately it isn't against the law and all you can do is speak with the manager which, sometimes but rarely works. I mean, it is worth a try to ask to speak to the manager and discuss some complaints, and if you don't feel comfortable in person you may do it on the phone. I would say a 3x5 is good, especially if you ever decide to rescue another. Also, remember bigger is always better.

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) They just opened a new Petsmart by me last week. Of course I did what I do with any pet store I encounter, I went and checked it out. First place I looked was at the piggy cage. Of course, 6 piggies housed in a small glass tank. I went to the checkout to make a comment and of course, she stated she would address it with the manager. BS I thought. This morning, I wrote a 2 page email to their corporate site. Most likely, I'll just get ignored. But I wanted to at least share my thoughts and offer some suggestions. I'm just tired of seeing this crap and nothing being done about it. My daughter got herself a job at a pet store just down the road from Petsmart mainly because we learned that when they get too many hamsters and fish, they're placed in the freezer there, alive, for disposal. My daughter, appalled, intentionally got a job there to help prevent this. So sick these people.

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) I doubt she can really prevent it unless she is there 24/7 and takes home all the sick animals, but that's impossible. It's cheaper for them to do so and order more from their mills. Working there is mainly just enabling them.

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) I wouldn't say that working there is enabling them. Working there could in fact severely cripple the company if handled in the same way that PETA has done with some of the chicken places.

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) I've got to admit my local Petsmart is okay, it doesnt house pigs/rabbits together anymore and I've never seen an unhealthy animal, although I think their rats could do with some more room, its not over crowded just my prefererce. The rabbits and pigs have a fair amount of room, although they have a very large rabbit that prehaps could do with more space he is in a large pen with places to hide. I will try and get some picutures when I next go!

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) We have never stepped foot into our local Petstupid and don't plan to. Yesterday, at our family Thanksgiving dinner, I was telling our mayor's wife about our guinea pigs. She said, "those pet stores really make a lot of money". I took that opportunity to let her know that we never, ever go to pet stores. We don't even buy supplies at pet stores, let alone pets. My mother-in-law takes her bird to a local pet store to have its talons trimmed. She was telling us how many guinea pigs they had for sale. I told her about the back-room breeding and how she (the pet store owner) keeps the sows in the back in aquariums breeding them literally to death to keep a constant supply of inventory. I don't know if I was able to get the message across to either of them, but hopefully it will give them something to think about. It was also a good opportunity to let others know why we will only rescue and never buy an animal.

Re: Is it Petsmart or Petstupid? :) When I went to check out the newest PetStupid, they had 4 or 5 guinea pigs in a small aquarium with 1 igloo, no hay or veggies, I can't remember what kind of pellets they had but it was probably seeded. There were 3 glass sides to it because it was one of those built in stacked cages, I really felt sorry for the piggys, who can't get any privacy at all! It was horrible! They had these "care sheets" that were supposed to tell you how to care for your guinea pig. Ha!
