Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me Ok i'll try to be as careful as i can so to not anger anyone. Firstly i am so very grateful to have been invited into this forum and i have and will keep learning so very much from all of you wonderful cavy lovers in here. I am well aware of the rules of this forum and agree with them all for this site, they are great. I have also heard about the situation in USA and possibly other places of the shelter issue and feel for you all. But i am a little bummed that i have not been able to find someone to talk to about breeding, showing ect I live in Australia and fortunatley we don't have the exact same issues as i've read on here. Our pets shops can be very dissappointing but our breeders sell only to specific people and rarely breed more than a couple of litters a year to keep up with showing ect. Registered breeders - we HAVE to register with council to breed or show - WILL NOT sell to pet shops, not here anyway, or i have not yet met one who will because of pet shops reputation. I suppose i'm a little naive when it comes to 'backyard breeding' and the amount of people i SHOULD know do it - id like to think what i don't know cant hurt Anyway to cut a long story short i was wondering - Only If It's Allowed - for those that are members of forums where i could discuss these topics with other people, is it possible to PM me? We don't have any foroums or chat sites where Aussies or others can communicate with people doing the same, at least that i know of. VJ i'm hoping you will read this and be able to clear me up - if i've said too much feel free to tell me to end the topic or whatever PS sorry this is so long, not intentional, also I'm not saying i'm bored or anything - just the opposite Thankyou for any help i may get!

| Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me I live in Australia too and let me tell you, the situation here, whilst it may not be as bad as America, it is still serious. I know of a rescue in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and in Wollongong (sp?) and would be happy to direct you to them if you are interesting in adopting. They will not adopt out to you if you are planning on breeding. This site is anti-breeding, pro-rescue. You will find no-one to talk to about breeding or showing as no-one breeds or shows here. We all love our animals and will not put our sows through the unnecessary pain of labour or the risk of death. I must admit, I am sick to hell about all of the people who have said recently that Australia is further behind or Australias situation is not as bad as Americas, because as I have learnt, it is and people, like you, that breed are not helping it. Let me correct some things. Quote:

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me Firstly I apologise for upsetting you. Secondly Registered breeders do not sell to pet shops as i said as i am registered and often attend shows, breed meeting and are close friends with many brisbane GC breeders/showers. i also said that yes there is obviously plenty of backyard breeders out there making it hard for all of us. Not once did i mention that i was looking for another cavy nor, unfortunatley, would i adopt one not knowing it's background and what it had been through. Upon joining this forum i have learnt much and have turned away many people to available rescues because they ARE better off than encouraging anyone to breed, be it with the ANCC or illegally. In conclusion I will not speak of this topic again and continue my search for info elsewhere. ![]()

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me Registered breeders DO sell to pet stores! I have a pedigreed piggie, FROM A PETSTORE! He incidentally was rescued a few years back, with shocking matted hair and bite wounds all over, and upon leaving the store with him, his breathing issues became apparent, and drove straight to the vet, we nearly lost him! I 'personally' believe the unwanted homeless piggie situation is worse here, but if you wear blinkers, you can miss it.

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me To breed a sow is to put her through a risk of death, this is something that no one who loves their pets would ever do. To breed a pig is to condemn another pig in a rescue, this is something that no one who loves their pets would ever do. Their are plenty of breeding sites out there for the people who don't care about their pets, I am very thankful that this is not one of them.

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me I'm confused why you specifically want me to explain these things to you. Do I know you or have we discussed things before? I'm not going to get too involved with explaining why we don't allow breeding discussions. Feel free to read the home page, the stickies in all the forums and the debates in the kitchen. Be certain to read the policies and guidelines and principles and philosophies forums. That should explain to you why this site does not support breeding/showing nor allows open "how to" discussions. The majority of GP forums support and encourage breeding and showing. There are only a small handful that are like this one. You should have no problem finding a site that condones breeding/showing if that is what you want.

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me I will just say the bottom line is that breeding "how to" discussions are welcome no where on this site. That means not in threads, posts, or in private messages. There are plenty of "breeder" friendly sites out there that will accomodate your needs to discuss how to breed. This site will not.

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me Ok, apologising for upsetting everyone. Sorry Ly i've not said i'm after 'how to' anywhere in my posts.VoodooJoint i've found you give excellent and precise posts that usually arn't based on emotion so i new you'd give me a yes or no if i couldn't find the answer myself. Some of you havn't read my question carefully so i will give my reason for asking the question - probably should have put it first. Sorry. I am studing at Gatton Uni, for those that know, and one of my major classes is genetics - i love it - I suppose i want to know if we can talk about THAT part of breeding, as, if you are careful, you dont have to mention real breedings. I am focusing my next assignment of the cavy and would like info on other peoples breeding as in genetics and the result of specifics, definatley not wanting to talk about which boar should go in with which sow next. There are a lot of students in my classes that don't know about or care about cavies and i DO NOT want to be one of them. Hence the cavy study. ![]()

What is it exactly about genetics that you want to know? I can't see how it could be discussed WITHOUT being a how-to-breed discussion? |

Re: Small question about rules on this site - need clearing up for me As far as genetics, I think it would probably be okay. Salana has written a few excellent posts on the subject of genetic in regards to roans, dalmatians and lethals. Genetic issues are the reason so many breeds of guinea pigs are ruined or headed that way and idiotic breeding for spots and certain coat types certainly has led to a lot of suffering and death.
