My Oath.

On this day, November 21, 2007 I have decided that I do not support pet stores in anyway. I want to have nothing to do with pet stores or breeders as far as giving them money to buy more 'stock'. I am wondering who else has done this? I am never going to buy another animal from a pet store ever again and I am not going to ever buy any supply from there with my own money. I really have come to realise that there is no point in 'saving them' because another animal shortly comes to replace ones absence. Also, has anyone realised that petco's modo is 'Think Adoption First', yet they sell animals? How hypocritical is that?

Re: My Oath.

I refuse to shop at any stores that sell animals. I will not buy anything from there. My grandparents do, unfortuantly. It is not my money, and its up to them how they spend it; they will not pay shipping and wait.

I just went into a petstore today (spying, ) and it 'looked' good from the customers perspective. That is, if the customer didn't really know what they were looking at. The bedding was all clean, and all the animals had big enough cages, but there were a lot of things wrong. It was visually pleasing and thats usually the thing that most people care about. That and the fact that is 'smelled nice'.

I make a list for each place that I am planning to report. I am also planning on getting a camera phone for more documentation. I want to make a little book thing that I can send of all the horrid petstores in my area. Maybe that will get more action that if I were to do them each seperatly.

Pros:
-Large enough cages for the rabbits, ferrets, guinea pig (singular).
-Clean
-Water and food avaliable.
-All species seperate.
-Friendly/Nonskittish animals
-Locked cage tops/Kids not able to get into them
-Seperated by gender.

Cons:
-Pine bedding (kiln dried? I don't know)
-No hay for rabbits/guinea pig.
-Mix foods
-No veggies
-Cages with bad ventelation
-Only one guinea pig in the cage (although I must say this is better than 10+ crammed together)
-Rats fed as feeders
-Horrible rat cages (lab cages, in the back and not visible to general public)
-Syrian hamsters kept together
-Breeding rats/gerbils/mice/hamsters

Probably more that I cannot think of at this moment. Basically.. if there is ONE Con, its a bad store. Any place that sells animals when there are so many already needing homes qualifies as one con by itself. Boycotting is probably the best thing you can do. Make sure to spread the word, the only way to stop it is to get as many people boycotting as possible.
