Emily, that's what I try to do. I'm not trying to lecture, I'm giving straight-up facts. If you or anyone else can't handle the truth, reality truly bites.

I know that there are very few exceptions. However, you are still supporting the breeders, aren't you? If not, where do they get their cavies?

Of course, get the cavy you want.

We're just trying to point out that there are kazillions out there that already need homes, without breeding more for sale. And they are just as nice if not better than the ones in stores.

Is breeding always wrong? If there were no breeding,there would be no cavy, true. But we're talking of an animal whose sole defense in the wild is proliferation. Captive cavies are not in the wild. In captivity they are multiplying like crazy, and surviving, and being put to sleep, because of it. There is no need for commercial breeding.

Where do they get their guinea pigs? Who is their vet?

Do they make you sign a contract that says that they are not responsible for vet bills?

Judging from your reaction to anti-petstore posting, you simply cannot.

Pet stores suck. From the mishandling in the petstore to the overbreeding and suffering of the poor breeder sows. To the store and distributor, they are not living, breathing creatures, but a commodity.

To me, pigs are most certainly living, sentient creatures and do not deserve cruel treatment.

We drive 625 miles round trip from South Florida to adopt our piggies from a wonderful rescue in Gainesville. It's a whole-day event, but we also know the rescuer well now and have a great time visiting. Much more fun than whunking down some money at a petstore.

Not wanting to drive a measly 45 minutes is a bit lazy. And both my wife and I work full-time. We also have a petstore that sells piggies just one mile from us.

Why do we insist upon driving all that way for a rescued piggie? BECAUSE IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO! caps lock How hard is that to understand? You petstore fans just don't get it and never will!

Now all you petstore fans can whine away at me. Have at it.

EVERYONE STOP OK. please. its goinf waaayyy to far. ive made my decision im gonna adopt one. but i may buy one too. that way ill have three. dont say oh well you could adopt a pair because i dont want to take the chance they will leave dagwell out. so its all ok it better can we stop this peacefully. you all answered my questions ... multiple times even though most of you yelled and lectured me. i wish i hadnt even asked a question. and this it what emily means ChadWPB your lecturing amd we know so every one shut up. maybe i should talk about food so the monitor people will close this one too.

Adopting one is good, but also buying one because you think a pair will leave dagwell out? Thats the lamest excuse I have heard! Come on! If you are going to end up with three, please adopt a pair from a rescue. They will all bond together, even a bonded pair can except a third and become a bonded trio. What if the new ones you get bond together and leave dagwell out? Thats a chance you take either way. Please adopt a pair. Do not let anymore cavies suffer, by buying from a pet store, you are part of a huge problem.

Maybe you should join www.guinealynx.info/forums explain your situation to them, maybe they will be nicer :-)

whatever i dont even care what you think ive come to a decision and thats it if you dont like it too bad you dont have to live with it. now please can we drop it. im not sure if im even gonna buy him but i MAY buy him. and bonded means they are bonded and that makes a better chance of both of them pickin on dagwell im not even sorry anymore. thanks for your help and be happy that im saving one. technically im saving two but i dont even wanna get into it. you guys think that there is only one way to go and that way is your way and your gonna degrade any one who doesnt agree with it. its not cool i though older people would be better than that. maybe this forum isnt as great as i thought it was.

I have a rescue. I have had many "bonded" boars, I have also introduced 1 or 2 more boar in with the bonded boars and they did just fine.

I bought my first piggy from a breeder. I feel very badly about it but I can't change the past. After reading up on buying from breeders I found I should ask for a pedigree (to see the parents, g. parents, g. g. parents. etc) So after about 3 months of having my piggy I contacted the breeder asking for a pedigree. She gave me one and it was horrible. The mother of my cavy was breed with her father (who is my cavies father too) so that was the first sign of inter breeing. Then I found out (after reading more) the father had the same Grand father and Grand mother as his daughter's (my cavies mother) Great Grandfather and Great Grand mother. So more inter breeding. I thought it was bad enough that the mother and father, were really father and daughter. Then I read even closer and found out that the fathers parents were also father and daughter but the breeder chose to breed them together anyways. Basically my cavies whole family was related some how. So it makes me wonder with all that inter breeding why my cavy hasn't dropped dead. You really don't know if you are getting a healthy cavy that wasn't inter breed if you buy one from a petstore. The cavy may seem healthy, but do you really know?
I think you should adopt to stop the breeders from adding to the over population of animals. (even if it may take years)
If you are adopting one then why not adopt another or just adopt one for now? It is totally crazy not too. Just leave the petstore piggy at the petstore. There are plenty of others that need homes more in shelters, just waiting to have a second chance at a better life.
If you buy that petstore piggy there will be several more to fill his/her place.

Whether you open your eyes and see reality is your choice. I just wish you wouldn't get mad at us for telling you not buy. When we have presented you with plenty of real reasons not to buy.
No one this forum can tell you what to do. It is your choice. People are just trying to help you do the right thing.
If you don't want to hear our opnions or advice then don't read them. (although you were the one who asked the question, dagwellismypiggy) But there may be other people out there that need this advice.
