If everyone keeps the attitude up that we can't make a difference, then we probably won't. However, isn't it better to try and do what you think is right rather than sitting by the sidelines and watching time fly by? At least that's my opinion. Fleur and dagwell (if you haven't already), please read www.cavyspirit.com/petstores.htm. Fleur, it's not that dagwell does not have access to shelters, because there are tons of homeless cavies in his area. If there really weren't any, it'd be a different situation altogether. I'm sorry if I am offending anyone, honestly--that's not the point of my posts. |

If you really, really want to, there's nothing I can do. I mean, maybe you could try getting him for free? As a rescue? I've just heard of people doing this before. They told an employee why it wasn't good to have them without hay and stuff, and bargained. |

Ok, thanks for at least listening, dagwell! There are some that don't sell animals, and if their entire chain doesn't by all means, buy there! That's a great way to get supplies. Hope everything goes well! |

Dagwell, there are so many animals out there, it's just insane. People don't know where to look, and people don't know where to go when they have a pet available. Shelters are the beginning, but look on craigslist.org. I adopted all of my piggies from craigslist ads, from people who had them as pets. They are all nice. They were all free. I gave the folks some home made jam as a thank you. The ones in pet stores just sit there. They are mass produced and shipped out. Forget about any socializing. There was a breeder close to here that had hundreds of pigs breeding in dog crates. Six sows and one male per crate. The pigs were sitting on a foot and a half of their feces, the babies shipped out as fast as they were born. Someone said you don't know what you are getting from a private person, but you do from a store. Actually it is way, way, the other way around! You get someone's pet that they want to find a good home for. And the only reason to buy from a show/breeder is to get a pedigree of some type. Most people just want a nice pet that looks good. All of the pigs I adopted look great and they were all free, except for going to get them. And they are all sweet. Most shelters and pounds euthanize pigs brought to them because the spaying and neutering is too expensive. So try to find your pigs from a rescue or something like craigslist.org. Just click pets and then type guinea pig or guinea pigs! Bam, you'll have pigs in less than ten days! |

Dagwell, we did not attack you. If you can't come up with an answer, that's a bit suspicious... Not trying to sound like I'm attacking you or anything, it's just a bit odd. You might as well back up your opinion if it's not the same, maybe we'll see yours better if you explain. Thanks! |

PLEAASE read this with an open mind. and dont go all crazy at me. but this is my experience and opinion ive bought 2 pig from the petstore before not knowing. and i adopted one knowing a little better. i think adoption is a great thing. IF you like the piggy or feel some sort of "higher power" drawing you to it. i feel that way for a piggie in a petstore and ive already picked out a name. i also feel that way about one on petfinder.com i talked to my mom and she hinted that she wouldnt mind having two "extra pigs" pigs around. since shes the main source of mooney that was an important part. so if i go into the non-cross country store again and see a pig that is tuggin at me to get him ill probably get him. If i go on to petfinder.com and find a pig that sound perfect ill get him too. im pro piggie no matter where they come from. but thanks for all of the great links and info. ill try to walk away from the pigs in the petstores just in case but i cant promise i wont go to that petstore. i think its better the petco right? if i can ill try to get my mom to drive 30 mins for pet supplies but i shouldnt get my hopes up. thanks everyone maybe you can see my view just a little bit |

I live in a area where there is alot of stores, shopping centers and malls. I just went up the street to go to wallmart. They had Petsmart there for years, then they just opened up Petland a month ago. Now they are opening up Petco and I am soooooooooooo fustrated about having Petco near me cause of what they do to the animals. It broke my heart to see that and I have thought about getting copies of the site about Petno and throwing it all over the parking lot so people can see what petco does to the poor animals. |

I did he same thing you did dagwell. When my husband and I found out about the c&c and relize what happens to petstore animals we were so lucky that our piggers are fine not sick. |

The pet store of which i got my guinea pig is really good. When i was choosing my guinea pig, he had lice so "nature pet store" took care of it free from charge. Also the salesperson had told me that the cages they had were definetly too samll for a guinea pig so she suggested me to make a new cage and also told me to check out this website. |

No one's denying that some pet stores are good and take care of their animals. Do you think all this talk about pet stores being bad is to protect YOU from buying a sick animal? It's not about YOU and what's best for YOU, it's about saving lives. The main point is that there are so many unwanted guinea pigs being euthanized while guinea pigs in pet stores are being bought. These pet store pigs were only born in the first place because people like you just don't 'get it' no matter how many times you're told. |

I think that whenever someone says "I am going to buy a guinea pig from the petstore", or "I bought my guinea pig from the petstore"...DON'T lecture them about all that adopting stuff. All you have to say is "I THINK IN MY OPINION, that adopting is better than buying from a petstore." If people say" I don't want to adopt", don't keep lecturing them about adopting. It get's very irratating sometimes. Many people don't like to be bugged about it..I know I don't.... Just my 2 cents.... Emily |

I understand where you are coming from. Not all petstores are bad. Usually the big corprorate ones are especially Petco. I know that Petsmart are good and They may have one too many in one cage but they all know how to tell what sex they are and they are seperated. I dont like to be lectured either. There are petstores that are willing to help the sick if you decide to take them and they would have good workers and vets on site as well. I was at petsmart onetime and a lady bought a guinea pig there and realized that the one she got was sick and took it to the vet. She brought the bill with her to the store and asked for a manager to tell the manager what happened to her pig and he took care of the bill for her with a choice she wanted. Either money, food for piggies or another piggie for the price of the vet bill. I thought that it was nice of the manager to do that. |
