Why wouldn't you hope that? It sounds to me like he and his mother both (which is important) are really trying. Even bringing you cucumbers is a pretty big deal for someone who was about to give it away a few days before.

I know you seem to have really "fallen" for this pig - but you also need to remember what is happening here. You did a great thing by trying to educate these people - and if they want to learn - that is wonderful! That is what these boards are all about as well. I mean - if you had seen the cage I had my guinea pig in when I got her, you probably would have wanted to take her from me too! But then I came here and got *educated*. She now has a new cagemate - fleece bedding, a big c&c cage, fresh veggies and kleenmama's hay on the way!!!

That is the awesome thing about educating people. It sounds to me like these people really want to learn and try to do right by their pig - but we'll see. It's great that they want to learn - and it's great for that young boy to be taught that the guinea pig is HIS and HE needs to take care of it! That is a very important lesson.

I know your heart is in the right place. Try to see the bigger picture and just do the best you can with these people.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

I think more so the MOM is trying and not the son...seems to me he is just interested when other people are talking about it or interested. I think piggiesinpa deff has her heart in the right place, and I think she just wnts the boys mom to realize it seems he is only interested at times..and thats not fair to the pig.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

ctinaw- I completely understand what you are saying and I agree with you, but I know it is the MOM taking care of the pig and doing all she can for him, not the kid. I don't want the kid to want to keep the pig just because he is cute and ends up getting another one because he sees all of mine. I think that his mother's heart is in the right place. I am more than willing to educate them -- but I don't want the message to be incorrectly understood by the kid. That's what I was getting at, just that I don't want him to want to keep the pig and be resparked because of impulses. I don't want the kid want the kid to realize how much work it is and not be so concerned with how cute it is for the pigs to make sounds and play with each other. You're right, it's very important for the kid to learn all those lessons, but he's not and he's not acting on them.

His mother came over with him and I found out that the pig was an impulse buy and that the kid really hasn't done anything different. He only wants to see them all interact and have fun together but other than that he doesn't really care.

But I have AWESOME NEWS! They surrendered the piggy to me. He is currently in his store bought cage now and will stay there for 3 weeks. The mother was so impressed that was able to handle him and so educated with pigs that she felt it was only right to give him to me! I AM SO HAPPY that little pig is going to be so happy!

Yeah I completely see what you are saying. I guess if I were the kid's mom I just wouldn't have let him get off that easy. But hey, I'm not that kid's mom.

Congrats on your new baby! I'm sure he will be quite happy now.

Yes, I am pretty sure he has a URI. I am taking him to the vet this week. The mom is going to foot the bill. I will have pigtures up later!

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

If it is the mom who's interest is being sparked, that wouldn't be a bad thing either, in the big picture. I'm a mom, I have two kids, and although the kids think the piggies are theirs, I am the one who does all the work, and I don't mind. In time, as they mature and become adults, this will help form their love and compassion for animals and know the right way to treat pets. Maybe the attitude of the mom and kid about animals will slowly evolve over time and they will make an awesome home for their piggy--all because of you.

I agree with you. I just think this particular kid is too immature and irresponsible to own a pet right now and Mom is just sick and tired of taking care of her son's animals.

You can tell pigs have a URI through a list of symptoms. Guinea Lynx :: URI will provide you more info on that. The pig is sneezing a lot and has labored breathing. He is eating, but not eating as much as I would like for him to eat. I'm positive it is a URI. I am taking him to the vet ASAP. I called the vet today and left a message about making an appointment. I should get a call tomorrow with the info and we will go from there. Hopefully some medicine will clear it right up.

Yay Stacey! I am so glad you were able get him! Although now you have 5 pigs! Haha what does Jim think?
I hope everything turns out ok with the URI, keep us updated and let me know when you have pigtures!
Talk to you at work tomorrow!

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

Going to the vet at 3:40. I'm leaving work early today to take care of him. I named him Porkchop, by the way. Seemed to fit the best.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

....and I'm back. The pig is now on Bactrim and I got him a shot of ivomec in case he was carrying mites or the like. If he is not cleared up in a week, I am to call my vet and go in for some x-rays. Porkchop didn't like his shot one bit, but the Bactrim he loves. Cherry flavored. He gets .75ml twice a day.
Hopefully this will clear things right up.

The other pigs I am worried about. I have Porkchop in quarantine right now and he has 3 weeks of this to go through. I am just afraid that the other pigs will somehow get the URI. How contagious is this, how fast does it spread? I am washing all my clothes and hands before I handle the other pigs but there is always a chance.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

Just an update - Porkchop isn't itchy anymore. I think the ivomec is working. He has stopped sneezing for the most part! His breathing is getting better and he's hopping around. He's pretty skittish and somewhat aggressive. He chatters a lot, but I think that's just because he needs some more socialization.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

Yes I will have pigtures up as soon as he gets better. I don't want to irritate him while he's trying to heal.

The kid has visited once to check on Porkchop. I wouldn't let him touch him since he was sick and was afraid he may contaminate my house. He told me stories of the pig when he owned them.

First story I was told consisted of the kid and the mom putting poor Porkchop in a pool. I was told they 'just dipped him in' and he squirmed and thought it was cute.

Second story I was told is even worse. They would put the pig on the bed then throw a blanket on top of him. Then put food near the end of the blanket cause it was funny to 'see that lump run around under the blanket'. The food was to entice him to go certain ways.

I don't think I want to even hear the stories to be honest.

Re: Ignorant Pig Owners - My Rant

Urgh I can't even imagine putting any pig in a pool and they thought it was cute when he squirmed that just enrages me. Then teasing him with food and I bet he was scared being covered with a blanket and not being able to see where hear any more stories either.
