I signed up for youtube just so I could comment on this video. I told her in my comments that the piggies did not need saltlicks and for her to visit this website. I can not watch this video now. It makes me so sad to think that the piggies that she is keeping and giving away will have this horried exisistance and that most likely the people will not have the sense to find out more information about GP care. |

Too much salt in any diet can cause fluid retention and high blood pressure. And believe it or not natural sodium is found in most fruits and veggies. So they get all they need between pellets, veggies and the occasional fruits. To many minerals in a pigs diet can lead to many problems including stones and sludge, kidney/liver damage and other problems. |

Granma piggy- Here is a link for some more information on why salt licks are bad... http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ral-licks.html And here's a link with more info on providing the proper diet: Guinea Lynx :: Diet |

I was going to link the first one myself but it really doesn't explain actually why they are bad. I am going to have to do some editing. |

I also think the discussion that entailed on the thread helps explain the concept a little further. Explaining about the veggies would be a great addition, though. |

Thank you for the information, there is way more to careing for the Lads than I thought, I have a week or so of reading time before I get the Boys. I also have a home to build, found some great Polar fleece. So will get started on my days off, next week. My Daughter is still learning so we will learn together, Thank You. |

It just appalls me how people can be so oblivious to the care of a living, breathing thing. It's so ridiculous. If you think you're responsible enough to handle having a pet at all then why wouldn't you be responsible enough to do some darn research and make sure you can take care of them?! These people obviously aren't competent enough to know that humans aren't the only ones who need civil living conditions. Somebody needs to reprimand their behavior and FAST before those helpless little piggies end up dead. Stupid people. |

Oi...disgusting. You would think people would do more research on cavy care. That video was just aweful. I flagged it. Hopefully it gets removed soon. |

Unfortunately, a lot of sources provide bad care advice, as I mentioned earlier. Although I would think it would be common sense to not house your pet in something so tiny. |

Hello, That is a terrible way to house Guniea Pigs, and everybody should know that, but it seems these dumbos don't. It makes my blood boil to see somebody housing their Guniea Pig so correctly, and thinking they are providing a "useful & correct" guide to Guniea Pig care. There are FOUR pages or negative comments, and they haven't removed the video, checked out this site or taken better care of the piggies. I cannot believe anybody could be so cruel, and this are "spoiling" their Guniea Pigs, which they are clearly, not. GRRR, I just hate people like these... |

Exactly some stuff is common sense..like that cage being too small. But what about stuff like not giving salt/mineral licks or not feeding mixed foods or giving unlimited hay and a big variety of veggies? There is so much info on guinea pigs out there that says the opposite of the above. And very few sites/books that actually have good info. |

So true Calliso. Many people get their info from old outdated books, breeders, pet stores, friends who didn't/don't know how to properly care for them and bad/wrong/incorrect info from many websites. Some even learn things from their parents if the parents had guinea pigs. The old info is so outdated that most people don't realize this. What might have been acceptable 10 years ago or even 5 years ago isn't acceptable nowadays. More research is being done on many aspects of care. There are a few that do research ahead of time but just by being on this forum as long as I have, I can tell you most do research after the fact. Meaning they don't know about rescues/shelters and purchase their pigs from petstores before finding this site. They don't know bigger cages are better, that pigs need veggies, plain pellets, etc. We've helped to educate hundreds of slaves here over the time the forum has been in existance. We strive to provide the latest and most up-to-date care info. We hope to educate hundreds more of slaves in the coming months and years. But there are some people that no matter what you tell them, they won't believe that the way we teach here is the correct way. It's not so much about common sense as it is about what they have learned in the past and have been given poor care advice. |
