Re: She ORDERS them! LIKE SUPPLIES! LOL I shut down another pet store today :) I'm willing to bet that CavyLove thought she'd get approval from us for her story. I too saw some holes from the very start... I don't know of any store where you can walk in, act aggressive like that, demand to be given something "or else" and get away with it. Normally the police would be called and the guest to the store would be the one with the problem. However, whether or not it's true, this situation is a prime example of how we don't want each other to act. It's a little over the top. It's also illegal as far as shoplifting goes... just because you don't see that the animal is properly cared for doesn't mean that a judge won't charge you for theft since essentially that's what happened. Good for you for taking in unwanted guinea pigs and providing a home for them. But if she had of called the police and you'd have been arrested - who would the piggies you currently have to care for them? Education is the key. Forcing your views on anyone won't get you anywhere. The way you approach and handle situations is very important. A lot of the emails and letters mailed out to breeders and petstores are hateful, forceful and immediately put the person on the defensive. Many of them probably get thrown out or deleated. I keep the book "How To Win Friends And Influence People" in my bathroom for reading, , only place I seem to get ME time... It's got some GREAT advise about how to talk to others and get them to see your point of view.If the story is true, good for you for taking a stand, but next time think it through a little more because you could have gotten in to a world of trouble - and like others pointed out... unfortunately it just opened up the possibility for her to order more animals. (That's how 95% of the pet stores get their animals, through ordering from breeders and petmills).

Re: She ORDERS them! LIKE SUPPLIES! LOL I shut down another pet store today :) Not wierd at all. Sorry to repost on the old thread you guys I just recently got back on to the forum and wanted to respond to all the replys. I was in a car accident and have not been able to get online for a long time because I've also moved. Ahh, internet again. Anyhoo, it's okay to close this thread now. In some ways I regret what I did, because it was wrong, but in other ways I do not regret it. You all have made some pretty good points, that I wasnt thinking about around the time this happened. Can't say anyone I know really thinks straight when they see an animal being neglected or abused. Such is life. -CavyLove

Re: She ORDERS them! LIKE SUPPLIES! LOL I shut down another pet store today :) So, on a bit of a similar note, is it legal for a pet store to deny guinea pigs and rabbits hay? I went into one about a month ago [in my local mall, all my life I have memories of going in there and every time I was scarred for life] and their rabbits and pigs had no hay. So I went up to the lady.. Me: "Um, excuse me, but your rabbits and guinea pigs seem to have run out of timothy hay. Your rats' water bottle also has a peculiar species of mold growing in it.." Lady: "Oh, I've been meaning to change that bottle.. And we don't feed our animals hay. They don't need it." Me: "But it's the most important part of their diet. And if you think they don't need it, why do you sell it?" Lady: "Because people buy it, okay?! Did you just come here to antagonize me!?" It got a little more vulgar from there so I'll stop. God I hate that store.. everyone I know does. Please tell me I can stick it to them somehow? You seem to know a bit about.. this kind of stuff..

Re: She ORDERS them! LIKE SUPPLIES! LOL I shut down another pet store today :) Depends on the state law. Iowa only requires that food and water be provided, and vet care when needed. I think there's a space requirement, meaning that x amount of space is required per animal, but it's minimal. I think for parakeets it is something like 9 in. per bird. I can't comment on other states, as I know only Iowa and federal law. Regulation of businesses, including pet stores, is mostly a function of the states.
