Careless Multi-animal food

I'm not sure if this is where this should go or not, but one day I was at a hardwear store near my house and I was in the pet section looking for a tie out for my dog(yes a hardwear store) and I walked past animal foods and it said Ferret, hampster, guinea pig, mouse, gerbile, and other small animal food. I looked at it and was shock that someone would even think that they all eat the same food! It was so shocking to me.

Re: Multi-animal food

That is pretty sick, especially considering you have strict herbivores (guinea pigs) AND carnivores (ferrets) in that list. I doubt that so called food would be good for any animal!

Could you possibly go back for another look and make a note of the product name and the company that makes it. Maybe then we could get in contact to complain about it?

You could also talk to the people in the store and see if they will stop selling it.

Re: Multi-animal food

That's not good. I can see how people would buy it though. If they had piggies and a hamster, they would want to buy it to save money and make it easier, instead of buying two seperate feeds. There's no way that it has all the nutrients for each animal though.

I'll see if I can get out there, but it probabley wont be for awhile since I dont have a car or anything. But next time I get out there I'll make sure to write down the name.

Re: Multi-animal food

I was wondering about sometinhg similar to this before.

My next door neighbours use a Tesco own brand food - but it is for guinea pigs AND rabbits? I really feel this can't be good for them, as I'm sure that guinea pigs and rabbits need different things in a bowl food.

I know this isn't quite as extreme as your case, but I have been meaning to ask for a while. I would definately try and do something about reporting them.

Re: Multi-animal food

A long time ago (2 years) I used to feed the Tesco rabbit and GP food. Of course now I know you can't properly support the nutritional needs of each species with such a feed. Also - I've just thought of this - wouldn't a multi-animal feed give some people the idea that all these different animals can be kept together? Like pigs and rabbits, for example. If there's a single feed on offer for both species, then surely more people would be inclined to keep different animals together because they think it combats the diet aspect.

Re: Multi-animal food

Yes that definately seems like a logical point - and if you knew not much about piggies/rabbits then I think many people would come to that conclusion.
