Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA Today I went to a petstore called "The Roundup". I went there because I was told they carry Oxbow brand hay and I wanted to check it out. What I wasn't told is that they had Rabbits, parakeets, and chicks. The conditions of the birds were bad, and the rabbits where just deplorable. I snuck some pictures in with my cellphone, so I could show you guys. ![]() This is one of the rabbit cages. As you can see, its a wire bottom cage with nothing for him/her to rest on. Also the amount of excrement in the bottom was simply disgusting. As soon as you walked in the pet area you could smell it, and it was quite overpowering. ![]() The rest of the cages. The top two and the bottom left had rabbits in them. The top right had the tan colored one, and the other two both had two medium-large black rabbits in them. They had no room to run, and nothing to rest their feet from the wire bottom cages, and also very very dirty. ![]() Though I'm too short to see the bottom of the parakeet's cage, I'm assuming it was no better than the rabbits. Their water was a 7-up bottle turned into a water feeder. ![]() The chicks. I do not know what is proper for these little chicks, but their cages were not exactly clean either. On my way out I mentioned to an employee that they should change the rabbit cages. He said "oh, okay." I don't think he was planning on doing so.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA Those pictures are terrible- those poor animals! It makes me so angry that ignorant, unfeeling people can be ok with leaving animals in those conditions. It would be great to put the owners in those cages and see how they feel after a day or so! I am sure they would enjoy sitting in their own feces a whole lot! ![]() And why are they selling chicks? Broilers for meat? Jeez, they are just trying to exploit animals and make money any possible way. Pretty sad!

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA I can't tell with the 'keets or chicks but those rabbit cages haven't been cleaned for days. Typical plain pellets and water (bread and water) diet and they sell them for $7.00 each. That wouldn't deter an impulse buyer one bit.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA They also had horse supplies at the store, so I assume the chicks were there for people who have farms. Still, that was the first time I've seen chicks in a pet store.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA The rabbit's cage is disgusting! These people shouldn't be allowed to sell pets at all.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA I'm really disappointed. I'm just going to buy my hay and food online- It's cheaper anyway. Geez.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA I buy mine from a shop that doesn't sell animals - one of the few that doesn't support breeding.

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA Well, this is good to know since I live about an hour from you and do my shopping sometimes in Bakersfield as that is where my boyfriend lives. That is really scary!

Re: Awful petstore in Bakersfield, CA I think you should report it to PETA. Maybe to your local humane society, too. Last edited by MCR_Rox : 02-16-07 at 10:21 pm. Reason: adding
