Being a fish lover (and "rescuer" of all of my friends' abandoned fish), I just had to chime in here. I have yet to see a pet store (or Walmart) in my area that didn't have dead fish in all of the tanks. The fish situation really is appalling. The employees never seem to know what they are talking about and I cringe when I hear them give "advice" to customers.
I even got into an argument once with this one Petco employee because I wanted an Oto and I pointed it out to him in the correct tank, and he tried to bag me a chinese algae eater instead. He was convinced they were the same and angry that I made him put back 5 different CAE's and continue chasing the Oto around the tank.
Cheri, how is the fish department at your Petco?
And for the person that asked this question, besides local pet stores there really isn't much of a selection for fish hobbyists. Garden stores sometimes sell pond fish, but not tropical or salt water fish. There are some mail-order companies and online places that sell live fish, but they often have a minimum order size and many fish die during shipping.
One dilemma I have run into is that a mom-and-pop pet store near me has the very best fish department and the employees are very knowledgable. But they also sell tons of live animals, including guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, cats, opossums, sugar gliders, flying squirrels, etc. I don't want to give my money to a place that buys from breeders, but some of the fish species can't be found anywhere else (especially the catfish, my favorite)...
