Re: good petco?

true, everybody is right, it is so hard to take a stand. i just feel bad for the many pet lovers who work in stores who really do a great job. and we have some pet store clerks on this site too...

Yep, I mean if there weren't feedstores around my area (since I try not to buy from petstores) then I don't know what I would do. Because I don't have the money to go out and order online.....

There are so many people who come on here and say that the petsore they work for is great (personally I think it's because they work there and inform people about animals). But it is a little extreme not to buy anything from a petstore. I mean I would rather have food for my piggies in 5 mins (petstore not that far away), then have them wait until I get to a feedstore the next day.

Re: good petco?

My views, though some may dispute this, are as follows:

1. I'm glad the store is great.
2. Sadly, buying means supporting the whole chain.
3. They still ship in their animals.
4. They still may buy from cavy mills.
5. They still don't check to see if you know everything about cavy care before purchasing.

Just my thoughts. I won't buy at any pet store again, unless it does not follow 2-5 above and is a privately owned (not chain) business.

Hmm ya I agree with your thoughts too but I am on both sides. If my piggs need food now, then I would not drive to a place that doesn't sell animals or isn't a pet store because they need food. I would get it where ever it is that fastest to get it from.
So petstores actually buy from cavy mills? I thought they just bought from breeders that live the middle of no where.

Re: good petco?

Petco doesn't 'ship' anything but crickets and merchandise. They don't sell dogs or cats for that reason. However they do get their small animals from local suppliers, I guess you would call them mills. They breed small animals to sell at the pet stores. And the birds are the same. However I have talked to a guy that worked at the place that my petco gets their pigs from and he said that they are treated well there and it's not dirty. He actually laughed when I asked him that. And he hadn't worked there for awhile so he had nothing to prove. So although I would adopt (and recomend that my customers do the same...although they aren't supposed to listen to anything I have to say...) before I buy at a pet store now that I know rescue groups exist for guinea pigs, the animals don't have it that bad at most pet stores. And I would also like to say that I know and agree that some are terrible and horrible and should be shut down!! I am not for all pet stores, just the ones that I know are good to their animals, or ones that don't sell animals at all.

Also petfinder.com is sponsered by petco, so I laugh when people slam them with one breath and then recomend that site to people.

Please don't take this as I'm standing on my soap box because I'm not (although I could! ...), just playing the devil's advocate here...

Re: good petco?

Thanks for the info, CavyCrazy. I see petfinder is sponsored by petco, congrats to them for that. It's not that I have an issue with that, it's just that it's not completely relevant to the way they treat their animals. Sorry for the shipping info, but I heard some things about that here... hmm. Ok, well, seeing as I talk a lot, does anyone else have an opinion?

Re: good petco?

...no worries (was about to type 'hun' then rethought that...) mncavylover...that's why I try to inform people because they don't know or have been givin wrong info. And I agree with you about being relevant to how they treat the animals, my point was that if people are going to say they don't like how they treat the animals, talk about all the animals (fish included). Walmart sells fish, and people from here have said 'yeah, walmarts fish are always sick'...I bet they shop there still...everyone does! But the only reason they weren't saying don't shop there is because it wasn't a pig or something else they have strong feelings for. So in my oppinion, if you're going to say 'don't shop at petco because they treat their animals bad' then don't shop at walmart either. And DON'T tell them to shop at petsmart because the one by my work has males and females together in one cage about the size of a 3x5 cage...

Re: good petco?

Yep, I agree with your point. People are often quick to judgement, and are... the word has slipped my mind. What's it called when you tell everyone not to do something and then do it yourself? Well, that's the word.

Thanks for info about shipping etc, I always thought they shipped I had no idea . It is just so hard to find the perfect pet supply store (I have but it is like an hour away) that is near you. Grrrr, I wish it was easier. That is kind of funny how petco supports petfinder.com but then everyone always says that petco is bad. huh.......................... Well thanks again for all the info.......

Re: good petco?

hypicrit...I have met a lot of those, and to and extent I think everyone is to a point about one thing or another. I tell my kids not to eat junk food, but what do I do at work?? Eat a chocolate bar for a snack!

It's a 'do as I say, not as I do' syndrome, many people don't even realize they do it.

Yep, I agree. I honestly can't think of anything I do like that. Maybe it's just me, I don't know.

Re: good petco?

ha ha, I know, that's why I thought it was funny. And the one thing that bothers me is that some times they say not to listen to anything anyone tells you at a pet store....I do take offence to that because I try to be informed as best I can, and if I don't know the answer I tell them that and send them to someone who can (like fish...I know the basics, but that's it...don't pretend to know! ) or refer them to a website (like this one or many others) But I know a couple of people who pretend to know and blow smoke up my butt, and I don't call them on it, but it's still irritating, so I can see why they would say that, but again...not everyone is ignorant and labeling them all as such isn't fair.
Today was a perfect example...lady has two pigs, but doesn't know that they need to eat hay...and is buying a mineral block...Cheri told them not to and to spend it on hay...should she listen??

Re: good petco?

You know when I was looking to get piggies I looked for 2 weeks, checked online and went to about 5-6 places. Some were little private pet store and it was sooooo terrible there were flys etc.....all over, I also checked 2 animal shelters that happen to have some that people brought in and they were older pigs, but they weren't that clean either, they had them in cedar and little cages etc. Then I checked Petsmart and didnt like that place either so I ended up trying Petco and the one one I went to was the cleanest I've seen , they even made me wash my hands and use sanitizer before holding them......this was all before i heard how bad Petco was .......so anyway I ended up getting my 3 from there. One did end up having pnamonia but I called Petco and they sent me to a vet that handles cavies and exotics and they checked all of them and gave me meds for the one and the
