Thumbs down A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

I was wondering if anyone would want to help me convince the people at Hermit Crab Association to believe that buying from pet stores is wrong. My user name is "Landhermie aka ALHC." It's at www.hermitcrabassociation.com. I made a post in the activism forum about it. Everyone is saying that they have to buy their hermit crabs at pet stores, because hermit crabs in need are harder to come by than ones in pet stores. I thought my post sounded convincing, but I guess not.

Of course, most of them there don't believe in PETA, either.

They don't think that pet stores are the best thing ever, but still buy hermit crabs from there. They don't think that pet stores take care of hermit crabs, but are still "rescuing" them and all. I honestly don't understand how they could be doing this.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

Im not trying to start anything here - this is truly a serious question. Are there such things as hermit crab rescues?

I don't know if there are rescues specifically for hermit crabs, but at least one forum member has adopted hermit crabs from people no longer able/wanting to keep them.

Just about every Hermit Crab forum has a adoption section, and some mainly focus on that section.
Most hermit crabs shelters/rescues are home-based run by hermit crabs enthusiast.
And of course check Craigslist and Freecycle.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

I work at the RSPCA in Australia and we've got a Hermit Crab that just came in up for adoption. It's the first time I've heard of it happening, but it obviously happens. You can even see the adoption page here:

Umm, I have a question cause I've just spit coke on my screen from laughing and it's probably wrong of me but, How do you vaccinate and deworm a Hermit Crab?? Being a Vet Tech, I really have to know.
He's really cute. I hope they have him with shells if he outgrows the one he's in and I also hope a Hermit Crab savy person gives him a good home soon.

I don't think you can -- the form used is a standard one for all the animals we get in, which are mostly cats and dogs, a few guinea pigs/rats/birds and farm animals (horses, goats ect). Although I mostly work in accounts, so all I really know about is the money we don't have (I have done the occassional guinea pig adoption, since the shelter staff know I can answer questions about piggies better than most of them can) and the amount of cats that come in on the weekend when I volunteer in the shelter.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

I adopted a hermit crab from a child neighbor who no longer wanted it. If the people on that forum look hard enough, I'm sure they could find a hermit crab to rescue. Maybe put up posters, you'd probably get tons of calls!

They're aren't being too nice about it, and said that I shouldn't have posted it because I was a junior representative on that forum. They also said negative stuff about PETA. It's turning more into an argument now, against me.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

Al though PETA is a bit extreme and was involved in some lawsuits those movies are real and I think those people are just being ignorant. You can get pretty much all kind of animals from adoption. If the people on that forum still rather go to the petstore to get their abused animals then I don't think they really care about them.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

Now they're deleting all of my posts that are related to any animal abuse not related to hermit crabs, even if it's in the Chit-Chat forum. They said that a news article had a graphic video when the video didn't even work! It said it was unavailable. I posted it only because I thought it was disgusting. I might leave that forum, because ever since I've been a JR Rep, the staff has treated me like crap.

I'm not new. I'm a JR Rep, meaning the whole forum has picked me to do certain stuff like moderate.

Re: A hermit crab forum that believes in pet stores

They're just ignorant. You should be allowed to post anything abuse-related, regardless of what type of 'Rep' you are. Animal abuse is a serious issue.
