I have found a store in town that has one guinea pig they MUST get rid of. They will no longer sell guinea pigs after he is sold and I have also been informed he will be uthinized if not bought. I have the money to take him in and he only costs as much as an adoption fee would be. Would it be right for me to save him? or should I leave him there to die?

Re: Simple Question If you are 100% sure they will not sell animals again, and you do believe that the pig wil be euthanised if unsold, then yes, I say take that pig. But if they continue selling animals - not just piggies - after this last pig is sold, then I would be loathed to give them the money to do that. Find out about a rescue near you and give the pet store contact details to it - if they don't sell the pig then convince them that a rescue is way better than a death penalty.

Re: Simple Question Ok, I thought i'd ask first before I went and got him. I have assurance that they will not sell pigs anymore and also assurance that he will most deffinately be uthnised if he is not purchased. I have to go by the store anyways to get supplies for my baby turtle, and I'm going to get him and bring him home and try to come up with enough money to take him to the vet. It brakes my heart to see him when I go in there for other stuff. He's been there for several months but no one wants to buy him because he is a big boy. I hope that he'll be happy with me. I already have a name picked out for him. Following the Harry Potter theme I have with my guys he will be Dumbledore! Thank you for the positive input. (Admins. I didn't know where else to put this, so I posted it in The Kitchen. Sorry if I put it in the wrong spot!!)

Re: Simple Question If they're just going to euthenize him, I'd request that they give him to you for free, or for very little. See if you could make a donation to a shelter in lieu of payment, as well. If they're not going to sell any more, giving him to you would cost less than euthenization. just a thought. I say go for it either way, though. Especially if they are no longer going to sell animals at all. They also might work out a deal that you can have the pig if you by X amount of supplies. Just a suggestion. Good luck, and post pigtures when you can.

Re: Simple Question I would definetly save it. Why can't that pet store just donate the pig to a shelter instead of killing it?

Re: Simple Question This doesn't make sense. If the store needs to get rid of it or end up killing it then they should be thrilled to be able to give it away. It sounds more like they are trying to pull your heartstrings in order to make a sale then do the right thing. Something isn't right here.

Re: Simple Question I agree VJ. They are going to pay to euthanize it but charge someone to take. I hate to think how they really plan going getting "rid" of him. THey are not being honest. I would request to take him free of charge since they are selling no others.

Re: Simple Question They gave him to me for 5 dollars. (I don't think they were going to uthinise him, maybe killed him by some other means, but I'm for sure that he would not have lived much longer had he been left in the conditions he was in) They were keeping him in plenty of space but they didn't clean it and he was constantly out of food. I'm pooling my money to take him to the vet he is very obviously sick and is in quarintine untill he is well. Right now he's sleeping but earlier he was running around and popcorning and look very happy. I'm not sure about pigtures, I'm curently camera-less (dropped it in the pool ) but I'll try my hardest to get some of him and the other 2, probably when he's health again so I can have pics of them together. And as to the fact that they made me pay for him, like all of you say pet stores are there to make money, they wouldn't give him to me and make no profit, common sense would tell you that.

Re: Simple Question Well if the euthanize it, they won't make a profit either. Personally, I wouldn't buy the pig because that store still sells animals and your money is going to go to the breeders of the puppies and reptiles.

Re: Simple Question They would lose more money if they kept him and continued to feed and clean his cage. (even if they hardly did that) Edit: I Just read the couple post above mine, and I have to agree with emo if they still sell other animals then you were supporting them. Sorry but the way I look at it you didn't adopt him for $5 you got him on sell/clearance. Last edited by standuprookie : 12-13-06 at 11:37 pm.

Re: Simple Question Here is the next step to keep them from selling animals and keeping ill animals wihout providing vet treatment. Save all of your bills from the vet and submit them to the store for reimbusment. They sold it to you, they sold you a sick animal, they are responsible for the vet care. This even goes for large stores like Petsmart that have the replacement guarentee or the "you must see our vet" guarentee. If they refuse, take them to court. Make them pay for their poor animal care. That will make them think twice about selling animals.

Re: Simple Question Good on you for saving him. That is exactly what I have done in the past with one of my dogs, and it shows you have a wonderful heart. It is definitely his little Christmas miracle...... I think there comes a time when the health and happiness of the animal has to over-ride our principles. Especially in this situation. I would definitely being taking it further with the pet shop now you have him though.
