Pet Stores

Hello,
Im new to this site, anyways Im trying to find the threads on Pet Stores. I think the buying animals from pet stores needs to be stopped. So I was just wondering how many people addopt theres from a shelter. Im going on Friday to addopt some so I was wondering if it's better to do that.

Re: Pet Stores

Most people on here are Pro rescue/shelter so definetaly get a pig from there.

There are a lot of things you should know before getting a Guinea pig though. Especially if it's your first pig don't get more or less then Two, make sure their both the same sex. Make sure you have the proper size cage (See front page), good food(oxbow pellets, hay, water), good tools/objects such as hidey houses, toys, proper cleaning material and good bedding(fleece or carefresh is prefered) etc. Please read these websites on guinea pig care very well before getting any:

Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig
Index of /
Guinea Pig Cages, Your Cavy At Home (Please meet cage size requirements!)
Guinea Pig Care and Health Information

Good luck! If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Re: Pet Stores

Buffy,
Thank you very much for your quick reply. I really am thankfull. I have had Guinea Pigs before so I do know how to properly care for them, it's just that I have never addopted one from a Shelter. I'm going to take your advice and go to Shelters from now on.

Thank You,
*Kellso and the boys

Re: Pet Stores

Great to hear you are looking to adopt a pig from shelter/rescue! Do make sure the place you get them from is taking good care of their animals and isn't a breeder or petstore in disguise and it will never hurt to read up on those websites anyhow since these have the most accured, updated and best guinea pig care advice and help out there. The things you may know about caring for guinea pigs may be inaccured or misinformed, a lot of petstores, breeders and even books give out bad advice and even the most experienced guinea pig holders here still learn things.

Re: Pet Stores

Okay great thanks for that information! It really does help out. Since Im new on here, im still trying to find where certin topics are. Anyways about 4 months ago, I was in PetSmart buying food for my other Guinea Pigs (males), they had one for sell, I had noticed it being there probably around 5-5 1/2 months. No one wanted to care for her. So I took her in, I no it's not good to buy from Pet Stores but her case was diffret. So Im just wondering is there a way to tell if shes pregent?

Re: Pet Stores

Have you had her in with your boys? If not and you have had her for four months then she is not pregnant. If she had gotten pregnant at the pet store she would have given birth about 2 months after you got her. Make sure she is definately a "she" and get her a female friend from a shelter.

A couple of tips from someone who has worked at a shelter:
--Check for yourself what sex the guinea pig is.
--Keep in mind that a female from a shelter could also be pregnant.

Re: Pet Stores

I don't think that your Guinea Pig is pregent becasue there cycles last between 54-78 days. She would have had her pups by now. To keep her un-pregent like that, make sure you keep the females seperated from the males at ALL times. Please DO NOT breed your gp becasue we are allreaddy trying to save thousends that are in shellters. Just remember that that is just one more to care for.

Best of Luck,
Cavy Dude
