Other animal welfare organisations

Not attacking PETA as I don't know much about them, but everyone seems to think that no other welfare organisation does even half of what they do

Was just curious about whether or not USA had the equivelant of RSPCA (uk) and whether PETA is the equivelant?

Re: Other animal welfare organisations

PETA is a seperate organization, but there is an American equivalent to the RSPCA. ASPCA: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Re: Other animal welfare organisations

PETA and the OSPCA (Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. Similar to other SPCAs) serve very different functions. SPCA people are local people who help animals in their area, be it a shelter, wild life rehab or as "animal cops".

PETA is about helping people change their lifestyle so that it has the least amount of negative impact on the animals. They are here to help you go veg, help you shop for products with no animal by products or that were tested on animals, helping animals in research labs. That type of thing.

Neither of these groups could take the place of the other. They serve very different and necessary purposes.

Re: Other animal welfare organisations

We also have the The Humane Society of the United States which just recently announced they will be merging with the Fund for Animals. Again, large AW organizations, serving somewhat different agendas. Anyone looking for alternatives to PETA would be well-served to get involved with this organization in my opinion.

Here's info on the merger: The HSUS and the Fund for Animals Join Forces

And this is another one of my favorites: IDA - In Defense of Animals

Just to dispell a myth. The RSPCA is NOT UK-wide. It caters for only England and Wales (possibly NI?). It does not have any presence or any power in Scotland. Here we have the SSPCA. I find it quite irritating that the SSPCA do not advertise in England and Wales yet the RSPCA are allowed to advertise and fundraise in Scotland. Many people are under the illusion that the RSPCA support animal welfare across the UK and hence give their support/donations to them.

The problem with both these organisations is that they are only as big as the funds they receive (neither are publicly funded, they rely entirely on donations) and the power the law gives them (currently grossly inadequate). Both of these factors mean that neither performs to their full potential.
