A friend involved in rescue has just emailed me a link to a site where people can advertise their "stud boars" for "hire". There is at least one boar on the list that isn't even a pedigree...it beggars belief Why are some people so fixated with adding to a world already groaning under the weight of an unwanted animal population, and in this case guinea pigs. For once! I am almost speechless...though nothing should surprise me now when it comes to breeders. For obvious reasons I won't post the link. |

It's actually quite common in the breeding industry, I saw a documentary on cattle breeding once before. Sperm from bulls is saved and frozen, then at some point used (via artificial insemination) into an own cow or sold / auctioned on the open market. Frozen sperm from a prize bull can go for several thousand dollars or more. DNA and characteristics are tracked, and with a sophisticated computer model to determine who 'mates' with who (all via artificial insemination) in order to produce the "best" offspring, some cattle ranchers can get as high as a 10% re-breed / 90% terminal ratio. It was on the Discovery channel or History channel I think. Pretty sick stuff. |

I can "understand" that when it comes to breeding any animal, it will be "desirable" to breed from animals that are healthy and are a good example of their breed. Not condoning breeding mind. However this site has people advertising their crossbreed guineas for stud, it's like offerring your mongrel dog's services! One owners stressed that they didn't want payment, just wanted their guinea pig/s to have a good time and be happy, or words to that effect. As you said, pretty sick stuff. |
