Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

Cute video Birdeye723, I think your dog looks more nervous than the piggie! Probably wonders why the pig is following him around.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

My cats and dogs never touch my pigs. My dog is kind of like Birdeye's Snooky. He just sort of watches the pigs, and if they come near him, he leaves, and he's big, too. He's a 100lb yellow lab. My one cat (three-legged Tuxedo) is seriously afraid of the pigs. If one comes within five feet of him he gets up and bolts! My other cat (25lb Skittles) was the one I was worried about. But she's fat, lazy, clawless, and harmless. One night I came home to find her in the cage, and I was so scared! I turned on the light, and there was the cat and the two pigs curled up together asleep! xD Skittles likes to lay with the pigs during floor time too.

It just depends on the person, the pigs, and the other pets.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

If the pig didn't want to play with the cat they the pig just would have left. Pigs are good at bolting when they are scared. If you want proof then walk over to your cage and try to pick up your pigs. Unless you have very calm pigs they will most likely run away. Does that make you a horrible scary creature, for making them run away? Some of mine squeal when I pick them up. They wheek like I'm trying to kill them. Am I horrible for picking them up? (all have been treated for mites. My girls just hate the hand of doom. But they are quite happy when I sit down and give them a treat.)

My pigs have a lot more fun with my cat then they do when I try to pick them up. They gurgle and peep as they chase her tail and groom her. They follow her in a piggy train when she walks around. They just think she's a big guinea pig with a real interesting tail.

I would surmise that most of you that are reacting to the video do not have cats or have cats with a high prey drive/have been or are outdoor cats. My cats have both been indoor cat all their lives. They don't have any want or need to eat or scratch my guinea pigs. Walking over to the food bowl and chowing down on kibble is so much easier for them that catching and killing a guinea pig. My cats are lazy and it's just too much work.

My cats also know the pigs are family, not chew toys. Just like they know not to scratch the sofa, and use the post instead. You may not be able to teach a cat tricks but they are pretty darned good at understanding what property is "yours".

I said it earlier but it bears repeating. I've treated my pigs for bites from other pigs. My cats have been bitten by the pigs. I have been biten several times by the pigs. But neither the pigs nor I have been biten by the cats. Nor do the cats bite each other. Who's the violent species here? In all honesty it looks like the pigs.

Beacuase for some reason we won't tolerate a cat that bites (people either dump them or drag them to the vets for meds and training) but when a piggie bites (and they can do damage if they want to. My husband has had both teeth sink in to his wrist quite deep when Spinel bit him by accident.) we just give them a pat and say "No piggie. That's bad. Now back in your cage."

That REALLY got a chuckle out of me. My sweet, innocent, blood-craving guineas... I mean veggie-craving. I mean, they're MONSTERS!

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

I know someone who had a "killer" pig. Not really, but she was never given the chance. She had to live alone because she attacked all other pigs. She was so territorial over her owner that she would attack any animal that came near her. He rumble strutted at the giant dog who ran in terror. She really went after the cat. Chased it clear off the couch. She totally lunged at it. She looked like a little tazmanian devil. We had to take the cat out of the room and tme she was out. We were afraid for the cat's safety.

Birdeye, that is a great video! The pig looks like it is trying to make the dog it's Momma, and the dog seems to be thinking, "What are you doing you crazy pig, I'm not your Mommy!" Both dog and pig are very cute.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

I think I have to agree with some people, I do still stand by that people know what they're animals are capable of, but I do not think I would have let the cat keep on doing that and taping it for that matter. The cat is acting like it will take care of the piggie at all. Snooky, he sits and talks to them and I know that if anything happened, he would protect them with all of his heart, he loves all of them. I don't think I would trust a cat unless it was very very mellow and calm.

Thanks everybody for your comments, I know he would never hurt any of them. The funny thing is, he'll usually just sit there, not this time.

That's the point. I find this whole argument quite funny. Especially since we keep having it!

But really, the pigs can do damage if they want to bite. My husband has 2 little teeth marks still left on his arm from Spinel's teeth. And Spinel bit him months ago. My husband's wrist was really swollen afterwards.

But in Spinel's defense he didn't mean to bite my husband. He ment to bite Kero. But he's blind and didn't see my husband stick his arm out in front of Kero. But man, if he would have bit Kero instead he could have done some serious damage. After Spinel figured out just who he sunk his teeth into he let go.

The boys are far much more of a danger to each other then the cat is to them. My husband learned that day that you don't mess with(or put together) warring guinea pigs.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

I have a cat and I have had her since she was 4 months old. She is now 13 years old. She has never harmed any of my animals, she has tryed swatting. But she does run away more than try to swat. I adore cats. Completely, totally, utterly. I don't have any children and she is like our child.

But I still think that the video was in poor taste, the first video. I don't think it's funny at all. It's very easy for a guinea pigs eye to get caught in one of those claws. I know all guinea pigs have different personalities but I haven't had a violent guinea pig or seen one yet. I have heard of some people having the odd psycho one.

I just can't help but feel sorry for the pig in that video. I won't be changing my mind on this but everyone is entitled to feel how they like about it. If we were all the same the world would sure be boring.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

Odd psycho one? All 5 of mine have bit me. Must be the city water then, eh?

Pigs just like to nibble. I get nibbled on all the time too. It's just the way they explore the world. Using their wee little mouths. And sometimes they get a little too aggressive with that exploring.

And as I said, no one would tolerate a cat that "explores the world with it's mouth". We'd all be bringing out the water bottle then. But of course it's cute when the piggie does it.

Ukyou enriches my pigs lives. My single pigs love her and don't try to kill her like they do each other (and that I find is truely violent. I should show you the pictures of what my boys did to each other last time I tried that lovely experiment) and my 3 girls have a blast with her during floor time too.

Heck, when Ukyou doesn't feel like playing during floor time they all hide in their houses and sleep. I think that goes to show how much they enjoy her company.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

Wow all five of your guinea pigs have bit you? Nope, none of my piggies have bit me. Yes they can be aggressive within their own species.

I think that is great that your guinea pigs enjoy your cat. I'm not disputing that as I am not in your home and nor do I know your cat. I am simply voicing my opinion about the video of the cat and guinea pig. I don't think it's funny and that is how I feel.

I'm really not interested in debating cats vs guinea pigs regarding their violence levels.

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

Yup, I have 2 regular nibblers who get a litte over zealous sometimes, 2 cranky old hens and one cranky boy who never seems to have forgiven me for stealing him from his "harem" at the Humane Society. All 5 have biten me. Biting also seems to be a popular form of telling me they have to go pee.

I have seen my cats do the same as in the video. Though I do not run and get the camera what I would do is pick up piggie so they can be closer to the cat. The cat would most likley stop swating at that point.

The cat is not being mean, just a bit lazy. But anyone who has cats and pigs knows just how lazy both creatures can get! Ah the life of being a cavy and cat slave!

Re: Irresponsible GP Video!!!

My boys like to nibble on my fingers to make sure they're not food. It doesn't hurt, it's just like their testing it out. Felix likes to lick me. But both bite when having their nails clipped. If their scared or angry enough they know how to use their natural weapons.
