Unhappy Where I adopted my piggies from...

Well, I finally got my new babies. And when the lady took me to where they were, I could not believe my eyes . She is a breeder, and a terrible breeder. Their living conditions were AWFUL! The smell of amonia would knock you down. The had no food or water, and their cages were filthy! They were all chirping away, begging for food, and trying to get water out of thier empty water bottles. The lady told me that she hadn't made it out there yet to feed and water them. She even had a few in aquariums. I told her how unhealthy it was for them to be in the aquariums. She did feed them while we was talking. She had 9 piggies. It was just horrible. I wanted to cry. I wish I could of taken them all, to give them the care and good life they deserve. She also had rabbits and hamsters. They all were in horrible living conditions too. I told her of this site and guinea lynx too. Told her she could read all about the care that they need. She is going to adopt out more of them. She wants to get rid of them. I told her of how breeding wasn't right. She didn't like that much, but I just had to get my babies and leave. It was too hard to stay and talk to her. I had to leave quickly.
I want to report her, but where would I? Who do I call, when I was calling around to find some to adopt, they all told me they don't hardly even get guinea pigs. It just makes me furious! I am just glad I got my babies out of there. At least I know they will have a wonderful life here with me!

Re: Where I adopted my piggies from...

I hope you didn't pay any money for them.

You will want to call your local SPCA.
Call your local animal control.
Call anyone you know who deals with animal welfare.
Call environmental health - if it is filthy, it is bad for human health as well as animal health.

I would have walked away. It would have broken my heart, but I would have walked away.

I understand why you feel like you had to save them, but as hard as it may have been you should have walked away and reported her. I would call anyone who deals with the welfare of animals in your area, anyone and everyone. You need to get the other animals out of that situation. This does not sound to me like an adoption at all, unfortunetly it sounds like it was a purchase. Please make a difference and follow this through until she has no animals left in her "care" and can't own any again.

In addition to calling animal control, I'd probably look into the local branch of the Health Department, especially if its as unsanitary as you described.

Like it was said, you local animal control / spca / humane society / health department. I would write up a follow up letter to her too, since you must have the address, but let her have it, just do it in a well thought out sort of way, maybe take a couple of days to get it right and reflect on how you worded it / if there is anything you missed.

Exclamation Re: Where I adopted my piggies from...

Well everyone, I called and reported her. They told me that they will send someone out there imediately. They told me what would happen is, first someone goes out there and will inspect all animals and then she will have a certain ammount of time to get the situation taken care of. And if she hasn't done what is expected, they will remove ALL of the animals and she will get a fine. The girl I talked to was just upset about the situation as I was. I just hope they get the animals removed ASAP before any more suffer!

Just wanted everyone to know.

That's great! Hopefully she'll get them taken away so she can't breed anymore.

Re: Where I adopted my piggies from...

I'm sorry as I havent been following the threads about where you were purchasing your cavies from but how did you get in contact with this breeder? Did they portray themselves as a rescue? Did you see an advertisement somewhere that they had babies available?

The conditions there sounded terrible, so hopefully it will be looked into and the cavies will get better housing arrangements.

Matt
