A relativly bad breeder Some of you may know the first half of the story of my piggies. Before I found this site I told my aunt I would have the unborn pigs she was breeding. Knowing basic info about pigs i didn't think anything of this at the time. Near to the time of having the pigs i did some research and found this site, i read the breeding policy, the stories about petstores and the quest for the preservation of cavy life and realised i'd made a big mistake. By this time it was too late to turn the pigs away so they came with my aunt and cousin. I'll never forget that sickening feeling when my aunt said she suspected on of the pigs was male but wasn't sure and i'd find out in six weeks anyway. After they'd gone I separated them and sexed them according to cavy spirit. Fudge was definatly a boy but i couldn't extrude a penis on caramel. A week later after having a 2x4 partitioned for 1 week they took caramel the female back and I kept fudge. A month later fudge started scratching and was treated for mites. I suspected caramel and my aunts other pigs had the same. After fudge was cured i started looking for a pig in a shelter to be his cage mate and found nugget. They are currently quietly deciding who's boss. Just as i walked in now I recieved some disturbing news from my aunts daughter who was in charge of the original 'breeding project'. Caramel, fudges 'sister' is male. I don't know the full situation but i can only assume they found that out because there has been a pregnancy or worse. I don't know how to feel as it was there responsability when breeding them to sex them right but i am here, with good correct info, where we are sposed to get things right to prevent events like this. I'm worried that by not sexing caramel properly i could have caused the death of a pig or more. I don't know the full details but I will be posting updates when I find out more. If nothing else on this site has convinced you not to breed then I thouroughly hope you take this on board; however responsable you think you are, whatever reasons you are using to justify it to yourself YOU are causing pain and suffering and YOU have the choice to stop or carry on. Think about that choice.

Re: A relativly bad breeder Definitly keep us updated Pam. Don't put too much blame on yourself. You did what you could and everyone is entitled to mistakes.

Re: A relativly bad breeder That is really sad, but please don't be hard on yourself. It was not you breeding the pigs, and for the novice cavy person, it can be difficult to determine the sex of a pig, especially when they are babies. It was your aunts responsibility to prevent this from happening, not yours.

Re: A relativly bad breeder Talking to her isn't an option, that side of the family is highly strung and I am a lot younger than her, she knew me when i was lidl so any thing i say on the matter won't be taken seriously. Even if I did go to extremes and explain the whole thing about breeding I have no doubt she would stand her ground, the whole family would rally around her and I'd create a massive family feud. I've tried to introduce her to cavy cages but she just aint bothered about it.

Re: A relativly bad breeder Well I had fudge and they took caramel which were the last babies however im concerned as to something really sickening that they did a couple of years ago. The rabbit got out of the garden and bred and when they couldn't get rid of the babies they drowned them all in the river. I was so shocked when I heard. My mum said afterward that if we'd have known we would have had at least one of them and she doesn't like animals that much!

Re: A relativly bad breeder I have some recent news to put the icing on the cake as it were. Caramel has got his mum pregnant. They want me to have him back. I told them they could have him neutered, they said they didn't take their pigs to the vets because it costs too much (i was speakng to my 8 year old cousin by the way, my aunt has put her in charge of the pigs). Theres more but i'm to angry to go into it right now without doing some bannable swearing so i'm going to cool down for a bit. Susan im considering your RSPCA idea.
