Pet Toys Made From Fur

I got the following email from PETA's Activist Network - thought I'd share in case anyone's interested.

"Will you do something right now to help stop the horrific slaughter of cats, dogs, and other animals for their skins?

Please ask your local pet-supply store whether it carries toys made from fur. Chances are that if you ask the question politely and explain what you know about the fur industry, the store owner will appreciate knowing the truth.

Local retailers need to know that furriers often deliberately mislabel cat toys as either fake fur or fur from animals other than skinned cats. They also need to know that every year, millions of animals—including dogs and cats—are cruelly beaten, boiled, hung upside-down, electrocuted, and skinned alive for their fur.

As a valued customer, you have clout, and your local pet-supply store very well might want to go fur-free and pull all fur products from its stores. People who care about animals don't have any business buying or selling dead animals' skins! "

That's terrible. I can't believe they'd use that kind of thing in a store that's 'suppose' to promote care for your animals. I will definitley ask about it in my pet store!

I got that email too. The local petstores here though I doubt will care. The petstore in the mall here has this sign with its guinea pigs that says its okay to put males and females together. Thats how they keep getting guinea pigs, the few times I have been in there, they have tiny babies ready to sell. They are always in trouble with animal control or DNR but they are never shut down. I hate that place.

Re: Pet Toys Made From Fur

Childs toys are also often made out of fur. I did a report on this for my english assignment. I had to do alot of research, and found out alot. I know no one on this site would ever wear fur, but incase you thought it was just a little fur trim or whatever, if the item is priced at less that I think it's $120, it does not have to be labelled what type of fur is used. Often it is dog fur or cat fur.

It is disgusting.

This is kind of a defeatist way of thinking. It can't hurt anything to at least try.

Re: Pet Toys Made From Fur

There are just 3 petstores here, Petsmart, the place in the mall PassPets, and Delilahs. I have said things to pass pets before, they really don't care. I asked why thier dogs had to live on crates and they said because they woudl just poop and pee on anything else and it takes to long to clean. I asked why they say its okay for male and females to be put together and they say because they get along great. Not too mention they never have hay, the live on pine, etc. The will just tell you they know the right way to care for thier animals. I met a girl once who worked there and she said all the puppies get 1 1/2 cups of food a day, thats it. I asked if its the same for a chihuahuah and a great dane and she said yep, they all get the same. I hate that store. Its all about making money, believe me, they wouldn't care if thier toys were made out of real fur. Delilahs doesnt really sell toys, but Im sure they would take it seriously. Petsmart, well who knows, they once had 12 pigs ina 1x2 cage because they had too many in the back.

<sigh> In my mind, this is all the more reason to keep trying. If people don't care now, then it's up to us - the animal lovers and animal activists - to keep trying and trying until we make them care, or if not care, then at least change.
