Careless BAD website info

I decided to post this in the kitchen because i wasn't exactly sure where to post. Anyway, i stumbled upon this site when looking at guinea pig pregnancy info. They have blatently wrong information.

Here is what is on the website. I bet more info is wrong, but i didn't feel like searching throughout the entire site.

"When will the babies be able to mate? The females will be able to have babies when they are about 6 weeks old. Males will be able to mate when they are about 10 weeks old. So make sure that they are separated a good time before those times because a brother guinea pig can mate with his sister!"

From: http://www.freewebs.com/aaguineapigs/Babies.html

Males need to be removed at 3 weeks, right?

Grace

Re: BAD website info

Yes, boars at three weeks, unless they are in need of extra nutrition from their mother than four weeks, but they must be watched carefully to make sure there is not any "boarish" behavior (like mounting and such). Sows can be removed any time after three weeks, people sometimes just leave them with their mothers so they have a friend.

Re: BAD website info

It does not really matter whether the father is present or not at the birth.

Well, I guess if you don't care about backbreeding your sow, it doesn't matter.

Don't be alarmed when blood comes out of the mother after all of the babies have been born. That's a natural part of the pregnancy.

Some spotting, maybe with the afterbirth. A lot is not good.

On average, there will be 2 or 3 baby guinea pigs in a litter.

I thought the average was 3 to 6? Or did I have unnormal litters with rescued sows?

You can actually email the website owner about the site: mailto: aagpigs @ yahoo.com (remove the spaces)

Re: BAD website info

What?! No mention of hay anywhere, just crappy pellets and yogurt drops.

from their site:
Qo I have to clip my guinea pig’s toenails and teeth?
If yes, can I do it myself?
A: Yes, it is necessary to clip a guinea pig’s toenails and teeth. If the toenails get too long, they curl under, and puncture its foot, which may cause infection. This actually happened to one of my guinea pigs. It was put on antibiotics and I always clipped its toenails after that. You also need to clip their teeth. If the teeth get too long, they will also curl under and the guinea pig will be unable to eat, and may die. You can wear down their teeth by giving them salt and mineral wheels and empty toilet paper roles. You cannot clip the teeth yourself. Take your guinea pig to a vet. You CAN clip their toenails by yourself. Hold them underneath the stomach with one hand, and clip their toenails with the other. You should give them a treat afterward so they won’t mind the clipping as much.
--NOTE: If you do give your guinea pig a salt and/or mineral wheel, there is less chance that you will need to take it to a vet to get its teeth clipped. You can usually tell when the teeth need clipping because the guinea pig will stop eating and possibly drinking.
--NOTE: There are certain types of nail clippers that you can buy for guinea pigs. But you can also use regular nail clippers or scissors

Re: BAD website info

Average varies from sow to sow. I have heard the average in all variations from 2-3 3-4 4-6, etc etc etc, every sow is different and while there may be a more average, I personally wouldnt count on an ' Average '. Every sow is able to have (maybe not healthily, or safely) up to 8 babies.
