Unhappy New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

Name is Crystal Smith, I live in Bloomington Il. We currently own 2 guinea pigs (had 15 at one time a few months ago) I have 3 children (2 boys, 1 girl) My 9 year old also breed rabbits.

Now for the "you are totally not going to believe this" part....

Like I said, a few months ago, we had like 15 guinea pigs (i did some rescue) Anyway, I had purchased a C&C cage (I loved it by the way!!) had it for a few months then some idiot decided that they didn't like the fact that I had animals and called DCFS (children services) they told me that the guinea pig cage had to go...it was unsanitary and that my 3 year old terminally ill daughter could get sicker (she never even went near the cage or touched the yuckies at the bottom) anyway...I was like, You have go to be kidding me ...So now, we are down to 2 guinea pigs (Uhhh, I miss my others ) Carmal and american cavy and Brownie, American Satin. Both very beautiful critters...they unfortunately are living in a small cage from Damars Equipment Co. in Illinois. I feel so bad for them...

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them??? We cleaned it like everyother day!!! Sometimes more than that. I am just so upset that people just can't leave their noses out of people's business...we weren't hurting anyone...the Guinea Pigs were therapy animals for my 3 year old....I must say...sometimes non animal people SUCK...I just wish I knew who did the calling....Grrrrr....

Thanks for reading...

I am sorry to hear that someone would do that to you. So people can just be vengful like that. I was also kind of dissaopinted to see from your link that you breed rabbits. There are always tons of rabbits in the shelters around here. I hope you weren't breeding the pigs also.

Unhappy Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

We NEVER bred the Cavies...had no desire to. They have ALWAYS just been pets. We did get Brownie from a breeder at one of the local rabbit shows. Cody breeds rabbits for 4H and to show. Many of his rabbits go to other breeders. We only have about 3 litters a year and it's "on demand" breeding. We just dont breed to breed. I am sorry that you don't like to see us breeding rabbits...however, in my opinion...there are worse things we could be breeding....pit bulls for instance....or anger, greed...you get the point. Anyway, Cody's cavies are 4H projects and will always be pets and live here till they die.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

I am sorry but breeding rabbits is just so sick. Rabbits have it way, way worse than cavies and there are SO MANY homeless rabbits. Why would you want to add to the surplus population? Your nine year old breeds them? Read this thread: http://cavycages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12572

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

Thank you for clarifying that. I know our views are going to differ on breeding and I don't want to start an argument.

If you mind me asking why did they say it was ok for you to still have the pigs in a small cage. Was DCFS just mad in the 1st place that there were 15 and you needed a super huge cage for them. Could you put the 2 you still have in a 2x4 or even 2x3? If you put a lid on it it would be the same thing as having a pet store cage, you know what I mean? A C&C would be cleaner as it would be larger but a 2x3 would not be super huge.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

That's why I am thinking of getting another C&C cage. They do need more room. I will be hopefully getting a bigger cage soon. DCFS can sometimes overuse their powers. They just didn't like the fact that I had a large, 2 level open air cage in my Living Room....

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

regarding my 9 year old breeding rabbits, he has spoken with many seasoned breeders, vets and others that have had rabbits. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to them and their care. ALL of our animals receive regular vet checks and if we suspect that something might be wrong, off to the vet we go.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

I am sorry, but a nine year old child (I have a daughter the same age) should not be in charge of a breeding program. I have quite a few pets myself, but they are my pets and my children just get to "enjoy" them. Children should be taught that some animals are homeless and need our help, some animals have to be put to sleep because of the population and every time we rescue a animal we save a life. No kid at nine should be dealing with what bunny is going to mate with what bunny and all that, he honestly does not or should not have that knowledge at nine. My daughter wants to be a vet when she grows up and help animals who are sick get better and try to make a difference, but right now she is worried about "nine year old issues" school, dance, friends, playing, etc. No matter how you may valadate what you are doing, breeding animals is a problem, and backyard breeders are even a bigger problem.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

1st of all, I wrote in regarding a cage issue...NOT rabbits...THIS GROUP SUCKS. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion...FINE...here's mine....

as far as my 9 year old.....if he weren't ready, we wouldn't be breeding..and he doesnt do it alone...I bred rabbits for 15 years!!! I have passed on my knowledge to him...

to everyone against breeding...NO ONE here has said anything regarding dog/cat breeders.....what about all the dogs and cats that are homeless. No one is angry at the farmer who breeds cattle for meat, our milk or chickens for our dinner or turkery for Christmas.....Oh wait, we eat all those critters...well guess what...most rabbit people, breeders anyway also breed for FOOD!!!!!!

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

Sorry, but I am a solid veg. Your preaching to the choir.

This is a guinea pig forum, which also has a section for rabbits. This isn't a dog/cat forum. We also have a veg section. Go rant on there if you have a problem with the meat industry, like I do.

It takes a lot of heart to save a life and rescue a rabbit, it takes nothing to put two together and breed them.

Personally I wouldn't have called DCF, I would have called the ASPCA with that many animals and a child breeding rabbits.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

I have taken in SEVERAL rescue rabbits and guinea pigs....I have spent TONS of my money making them better. We do not breed rescues, ONLY quality, pedigreed, healthy rabbits....

I LOVE MEAT>>>MEAT GOOD

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

in this area...there are HUNDREDS of JR breeders. Many around 9-15. SOme even younger with parents help. Stick to you GPs...as far as aspca...the humane society has been here...theres nothing they can do...we don't sell to just anyone...and there is a legal contact for those who purchase pets.....if they don't want the animal anymore, they HAVE to bring it back here....we then find it a good home...where it can stay forever. We screen our buyers....unlike other breeders. I am sure that on here there are Cavy breeders..they just dont' say anything cuz of people like you guys....

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

Hmm 2 plus 2 just isn't adding up here. 15 guinea pigs, breeding rabbits and DCFS? Not a pretty picture at all.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

For every rabbit you sell another ends up without a home in a shelter or rescue and gets euthanized.

Obvisiously DCF had to have seen something bad to have made them give up 90% of their pigs.

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

yeah..they saw that I had a large cage with cute animals in it and that my daughter was ill....they assumed that she was ill from the piggies...that's not the case, she was born that way...

it doesn't matter now anyway....I was just asking a cage question...but forget about it....

Re: New here and You are totally not going to believe this!!

You already got the answer. Build a C&C cage, put a top on it.
