Theres this girl at my school, I was talking to her and found out she had guinea pigs. When I asked how many she has, she didn't know "About 40-60" she said. She has a big run and just lets them go in there, males and females. Shes not sure how to tell male from female. When I asked her about feeding, she says they get 16% rabbit food and veggies as treats, no hay. I'm going to see the place really soon, but I was wondering if theres anything I can do to help those poor piggies?

Re: Help please, byb Whoa. That's really sad. It's probably common place for them to die off. I bet she doesn't even give it a second thought. She might think, 'pity, I always liked that one's coloring', but that would be that. It's sickening. I really have no idea what you could do to help them... I suppose you could just attempt to get her educated.

Re: Help please, byb Hopefully it'll be clean, unfortunately there's little you can do - as once a person gets that many pigs I'm highly doubtful it'll be easy to show them they're doing the wrong thing. Please let us know how it goes, is the run inside or outside?

Re: Help please, byb That's far too many guinea pigs for a school-age kid to take care of, and the fact that they're mixing and breeding freely?! Definitely contact an animal welfare group, as there's no way she can be making sure that they're all in good health, and she's creating more and more babies while cavies are dumped in shelters. Plus they aren't getting the right sort of food. This doesn't sound like a good set-up. If you get to see the place and it doesn't conform to the advice given on this website, definitely contact your local animal welfare society. this is very irresponsible pet-keeping, even professional breeders wouldn't keep their animals in that kind of set-up.
