Angry People are just so Ignorant.

Mmkay. This friend of mine got her piggy about five months ago. First, she kept it in a PETSTORE cage all alone. I'm no piggy expert but I made my babies a new cage (C&C They love it).Anywho now she was too irresponsible to keep the cage clean and said the poor Cavy was "too loud". Now her piggy is outside in a TREE. Apparently someone told her this was effective, safe, and "not as messy". I have yet to see to the poor piggy but I feel miserable already. I offered to take her in and let my friend keep the cage-she said sure. When there she said that she'd changed her mind and enjoyed having it. I at least convinced her to bring it in when it's chilly but I still worry....What about summer? It's FLORIDA!Geesh. Now she thinks I'm a horrible person for pointing this stuff out....Anyone have any suggestions for dealing with people like this? I feel so bad for poor lil' Whitey. Sorry if this is the wrong section or I said something wrong- I figured I was ranting so....yeah. It's just so aggrivating!

Re: People are just so Ignorant.

A tree? You mean she let it run wild or is it in a cage?

Speak to her parents if you cant get through to her. Or discuss it with your own parents voice your concerns and then let them deal with the matter.

Im sorry its so frustrating but you can always have a good rant here . If worse comes to worse I would report it to the RSPCA or similar, they keep it all confidential. She really doesnt deserve to have this guinea pig... Print out some information from guinea lynx, cavycages and cavy spirit. Show these to her to prove you are not just ''saying'' these things but these things are true. You have to keep them in a clean cage, you have to look after it. Yes your pig will squeal its normal. She has to get this through her head and understand that your not being mean but trying to be a good person to this animal.

I hope ive helped a little sorry if I was a little vague ive been up all nite

If she keeping it in tree see if you could "adopt" it from her...it doesnt sound like she cares much for it.

I don't know who even thought up the idea for the tree, it doesn't even make sense to someone who doesn't raised pigs! (I asked )

I don't, either. It was a neighbor,friend, or something.
It sounds even stranger when I think about it.

Of all the places to keep a pig. Your friend is truly an idiot.

Re: People are just so Ignorant.

Wow. In a tree...I can't even imagine.

If she continues to keep the pig outside, I'd imagine it will be living on borrowed time by the heat and humidity of a Florida summer roll around. Not to mention the mosquitos...*sigh*

For the pig's sake, I hope its "owner" changes her mind and lets you take her home. Good luck with this.

Re: People are just so Ignorant.

I can't believe she would even think about doing that, keeping a piggie up in a tree...What does she do when it rains?? I seem to remember somehting about that it rains a lot there.

Re: People are just so Ignorant.

Yeah. It does rain a lot in the summer. I'm assuming she will bring the piggy into the laundry room.(That's where it goes now when it's too chilly.)
I'm gonna try to "adopt" the piggy from her tommrow and print out info today.
Thankies for the luck and help.

Whoa, I agree with Ly. Hello, it's a guinea pig not a bird! Poor little guy.

Where in Florida are you?

In a tree? Are you serious, she's not pulling your leg? Maybe 'under' a tree.

Either way, not a responsible person.

Re: People are just so Ignorant.

Ignoring predators and URIs and things she may not think of, what about rain- she might not always be home to bring him inside. Call animal control, and remember to use phrases like "urine burns", "dehydration", "heat stroke/ freezing", etc. Don't let her know you called, so she doesn't have time to fix it.

If you don't think it's bad enough that your local authorities will do anything, take a few extra grids and coroplast, make a cage, and tell her that using a bigger cage will keep all the pee and poo from becoming so concentrated and stinking, and that it's easier to clean. Maybe even get a cheap dustpan from the dollar store, and show her where she can get one of those big bales of pine for five bucks (walmart has them, that doesn't stink/doesn't really need to be aired out for $5 where I live, if not check southern states, tractor supply, etc) If she puts many layers of newspaper and leaves edges so the pine can be rolled up in it, it should be easy enough even for the biggest idiot to clean. I hate to suggest you spend your own money and time to do what she should be, but I worry it will be the only way that she gets the message.

If she doesn't have other pets, help her find a space on the floor and don't give her grids for underneath so that she can't pick it up and take it outside easily. Then tell her horror stories of birds or foxes eating piggies, and being able to break into pet store cages and even wooden hutches.
