| HI Guys, I just have to vent with these rescues it's just an appauling situation from the owners to the state of the pigs. These owners contacted the rspca and they put them onto me because they were going to euthanase the pigs. Basically the story is that a year ago this lady and man with 2 small boys aged around 7 and 4 bought 2 guinea pigs from a petshop. The pigs were male and female and they bought them to give their kids the experience of babies. Well within the space of less than a year the sow has had three litters and her daughters then littered. The original pigs are now dead and these are their offspring and then their offsprings offspring. They've been giving the babies away for free and they have 7 pigs left. Basically the story is that they wanted to give these 7 pigs back to the original petstore but the petstore wouldn't take them because of quote: the few sores on them " so thats when they called the rspca and the rspca put them onto me. Anyhow basically they told me the boys lost interest and they also can't afford any vet bills. The family arrived at my house this afternoon with the 7 guinea pigs. 2 male adults, and 3 female adults and 2 babies. They told me on the phone that some of the pigs were still in fine condition and didn't have the mites. To my shock all 7 pigs have severe sellnick mange. They brought along the cage the pigs were in to give to me ( ive put it away and it will be thrown away its probably riddled with mites ). The cage all of these pigs have been in is a lawn cage with a wire bottom and is approximately 90cm in length by 40cm in width with a small enclosed end. All of these pigs plus more in the past were housed in this tiny box it's just appauling. They also brought along free feed for me ( also chucked it ) it consists of just lucerne and barley. The entire time they were here the little boys were running around like maniacs like they have adhd or something they kept touching all my cages and i kept telling the woman to get them away from my pigs because they had been handling their animals so I'm very angry now about this. The boys then kept picking up their own pigs very roughly. Anyhow all the pigs are very wild in nature. Two are in extremely shocking conditions I don't know if they will live if they don't improve within the week I'll have them put to sleep their in so much pain. I cannot touch these two pigs at all without them ripping into their skin. They've both been flipping onto their backs everytime they go to scratch. One of the two even started to have a fit until i flipped her back over. All 7 pigs are underweight and I was told only two were when on all of them their backbones are sticking out. Only the biggest male has no wounds the rest all have wounds including the babies and three of the pigs have no hair and extremely scaly itchy skin... As I'm typing this message I can here the two worst pigs still squeaking in the background. All pigs have had a bath tonight I couldn't touch three of them without grabbing them in a damp towel it was far to painful. They've all been ivomeced and had ivomec poured all over them. Most have had a heap of betadine put on their wounds and on scaly parts. On monday when my revolution arrives I will be treating them all with it because i have to kill these mites asap before they kill the pigs! ALl sows were housed with the boars aswell so some may be pregnant again. Anyhow sorry i just had to vent it has been a prety stressful night trying to give these pigs some comfort. People that keep their pigs like this and don't treat them should be shot! The only thing I can say is that thank god they decided to get rid of all their guinea pigs... I was nice to the people while they were here I explained to them what was wrong with the pigs and they've seen my setup so hopefully they've taken in some good information and they also have the website link. I can't help what's happened I can only help prevent the same thing from happening again but sadly there are many more people that keep their guinea pigs in this manner that havn't the knowledge or money to keep them with the same resulting. | Re: Absolutely Appauling case of abuse ( warning graphic pics ) http://www.geocities.com/fizzyjess/rescuepig13.jpg All 7 pigs are in quarantine area this area is separate to the rescue area and to my own pigs area. I have three areas all up, quarantine area, rescues and available adoptables area, and my own pigs area. The pigs were filthy they look a heck of alot nicer in these pics than they do in real life. You can't feel the scaly skin , hear the squeels or see their weights , wounds and feel their bones in photos... I hate asking favours but if anyone could spare a small donation It's be very greatfully appreciated. I had to take a rescue pig to the vet earlier this week costing $75.00, had several rescue pigs come into the rescue this week and will need to purchase some more Ivomectin, Revolution and normal mite wash tomorrow aswell as some treatment for wounds as I'm fresh out it all went on the previous 4 pigs that came in with mange . They'll probably need ongoing treatment for the next several months.*~jess~* Last edited by enchantingcavy : 01-07-06 at 06:25 am. |

| Re: Absolutely Appauling case of abuse ( warning graphic pics ) That's horrible, I cant believe people can be so stupid!! I can't see the pictures for some reason, but that is possibly fortunate for me since I don't deal with piggy abuse pictures very well. Are you taking donations to help with the care and rehoming etc?? If so I'd love to help - I can't really give a lot, but I just want to do something! |

| Re: Absolutely Appauling case of abuse ( warning graphic pics ) That's so sad. The parents don't seem to understand how to bring up their own kids either - letting them run around like mad at your house. Let alone looking after the guinea pigs.I can't see the pics either. ![]() |

| Re: Absolutely Appauling case of abuse ( warning graphic pics ) How can anyone let them get like this! The last few look really sore. Poor pigs. The babies don't look very old at all. We had something simlar to this. Had 7 in all covered with mites and 2 were just skin bone and cuts. Fudge would jump everytime you even touched a hair on her-what hair she had- and her mum was the same. Even now she has cleared up has good skin and all everytime you pick her up she still crys out and jumps, we think she has something in her mind that is telling her she still has cuts everywhere. For some reason she has never grown at all. I have everything crossed for all of them. |
