Exclamation false info on website

i was browsing through some gp websites when i came upon this website http://geosci.uchicago.edu/~amp1/aboutcavies.html here is some of the info it had to offer:

"Another thing you should consider is if you want baby piggies or not. We would suggest getting a boy and a girl, because guinea pigs like to have a mate and children, but if you really don't want baby cavies, you should get two girls. Two boys together will often fight, so you should not get two boys."

i was disgusted when i read this information, thank goodness there are websites like this to set people straight

Re: false info on website

Do you think maybe someone should notify them? I read it and it is incorrect in many areas as the above said.

Re: false info on website

Unfortunately there is a lot of mis-information about on the internet. There are also a lot of children now setting up their websites, and while many teenagers are thankfully, very pro-rescue/welfare....there are also a lot into breeding. This is usually reflected on their sites and forums.

Has anyone else emailed this site? If not, I'll do it when I have time and make a few suggestions.

Re: false info on website

Since there are millions, if not billions, of websites on the web, you're going to find some with the wrong information! It really does get frustrating, but you have to do what you can and hope more people are reading the right websites and not the misinformed ones!!
I'd just like to mention this, I was going to visit my local petsmart sometime. (it's just after the holidays, so definetly not now!!) I was going to just look over and leave them a note if I found that they were selling cedar bedding or other dangerous products like the feista pellets SleepyBirdy mentioned. None of the petsmarts or petcos around me have people who really know anything about the animals, as far as I'm aware of, so I don't want people who don't know any better making mistakes like buying the cedar bedding, and causing tons of problems they wouldn't be able to figure out.

! That is just some very stupid information! So many people on this site and other people have all boys and they get along fine! And Guinea pigs LIKE to have babies! I don't think so!*Screams*

Re: false info on website

Binas, if they didn't like to mate and have babies, then why would we need to seperate males and females?

By the way, I don't agree with the statement on the website about putting them together, I'm just questioning your response.

I like to "mate" with my husband but I sure don't like having babies. Fortunatly I can use protection to take care of that. The pigs don't get that choice. I'm sure if they knew they had a 20% chance of dying they might be a little less likely to do it. Animals mating may be natural and a fact of life but until the out of control population of homeless animals is taken care of we need to do everything we can to help not hurt the situation.

Re: false info on website

It is not a fact of whether they like or don't like it. They have no control of when they come in to heat and males mate because it is instinct.

It's not exactly a "Hey baby, you look cute, wanna come over to my pigloo?" kind of response.

It has been proven that some animals in fact enjoy mating, though I concede it is mostly monkey and ape species that this has been documented in. And it humans the fact that we enjoy it makes us more likely to mate. It is also a programmed response to keep our species on that planet.

The is a story of a finch I once heard. The male loved mating but didn't want babies so he kept throwing the eggs out of the cage.

It's kinda like the reason we like to eat. We know that we need to eat in order to stay alive but if we didn't like it imagine what a chore it would be to do all that cooking and cleaning to do something we really don't want to do. The fact that we are programmed/evolved/designed whatever to enjoy food makes our lives so much nicer.
