How long to Quarantine

Hey all, got a question
I recently got my 1st Pig, and I want to get her a playmate, but don't know how to quarantine. I am buying the pig from a pet store (yes a pet store) I truat this pet store completely, It's a family run shop (not a large corparation chain) and they are dedicated to small animals. My ? is if I'm getting my pig from the same place I got the other one, do I still need to Quarantine because the new one is coming from the same place the other one came from. and how long do I quarantine the new pig???

You still need to quarantine for at least 2 weeks, in another room preferably. Wash your hands between contact of the 2 pigs

From the way it was worded I took it to mean that they didn't want to hear it because they did not care so I just left it at answering the question and letting it go. There are enough anti petstore threads on this board (and recent!!) that they either know better and don't care, or they came on here specifically to ask about on or two things and leave it at that.

Just because it's a family run shop does not mean they treat the guineas better, provide proper size housing, give hay, veggies and good quality pellets or that they don't buy from breeders or breed their own. When you "buy" your pig from the pet store, just know that you will have condemned a piggie in a shelter/rescue.

I have one of those type shops in my town, the woman keeps 1-2 piggies in small cages (about a 1x1 or slightly larger equivalent of a C&C) or 10 gallon aquariums, buys from breeders or breeds her own and doesn't give hay or veggies. I have seen up to 3 baby piggies in one aquarium. I can say they have decent pellets as she feeds Mazuri.

Quarantine should be for 3 weeks in a separate cage in a separate room. Many illnesses take at least 3 weeks to incubate.

Usually the local mom and pop pet stores are worse than the chains. There isn't a corporate office to complain to and their backyard breeder suppliers are usually worse than the pet mills. I bet the pigs are inbred and backbred.

What's the difference from saving a Pig from a shelter, or saving one from a "Pet store" saving a pig is saving a pig.... are Pet store pigs any less worth saving then these All Holy Shelter pigs you all talk so highly about. And whos to say these shelters provide GP's the necessary things for a good life they could be just as bad as a pet shop, so keep that in mind next time you are preaching your B.S. to people

Because pet store pigs come from MILLS and BACKYARD BREEDERS. Shelter pigs die everytime someone "BUYS" a petstore pig. You CANNOT "rescue" or "save" a petstore pig, period.

And what's wrong with ladies that talk to their cats? Why did you come to this board, GuineaGuy? This is a rescue-friendly board. There are dozens of other guinea pig boards out there, that would praise you for buying your pets from a small store. This isn't one of them. We are a rescue friendly board. It's stated very clearly all over this site. What goes on in your home, is none of our business. But what you choose to bring onto this board is. If you didn't want us to comment on it, you shouldn't have brought it up.

According to you nut jobs all pet shop pigs are "bad" but how the hell do you know the pig you got from the shelter didn't come from a pet store.....I bet you they did, b/c pet shops are everywhere...
