Angry Wearing fur coats . . .

I am all of you know exactly what i am, talking about. How many times have you seen someone wearing a fur coat some where and you start to *scream* on the inside! This has happened to me a lot lately and i have such an urge to run up to those people and YELL at them. Do they just not understand it took 30 to 40 animals to make one lousy coat!

My question is, what would be a good way to approach these people? Should i approach them at all? If i don't say something, one day i'm going to burst!

Please, if anyone has any advice, that would be great.

Grace

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

guinea-gal, I'm right with you.

There was a news story over here recently about how Paul McCartney has vowed not to return to China after seeing footage of their cruel methods of caging and killing cats and dogs for fur. It was so distressing to watch I can't even go into detail

Have you approached someone before and asked them if they're aware of the torture behind their clothing?
Ultimately, I think if someone has the audacity and small-mindedness to wear fur then no matter what you or I choose to say to them they will not change their way. It'll take more than any individual protest towards them. As hard as that is to refrain from doing anything given that situation. It makes my blood boil as well, but I try and vent my spleen by putting my energy instead into supporting organisations who aim to end such practices in the eternal hope that more voices will be listened to

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Whatever you do make sure it's *real* fur. I have so much fake fur and some of it looks really close to the real thing. I have a faux sheep skin rug that looks so real. You just can't tell the difference sometimes.

Fur is disgusting. I can't even touch it without gagging. I can deal with fake fur because it doesn't leave the dead animal thought.

I love fake fur. Nice look, no mess. You just can't stick it in the dryer on high though. I ruined the trim on my winter coat that way

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Good point Sabriel. Make sure that you find out if it is in fact REAL fur before asking someone if they know how animals were tortured to make their coat. Some of the faux fur is so lifelike now, that it's virtually impossible to tell the difference unless you ask or check yourself.

I like talking to people who wear fake fur... and coughing "Muppet Killer" under my breath. But I don't wear fur, real or fake. *shrug*

You go up and say to them...."If you were furry could I wear you as a coat?"

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

I've had people approach me and ask me if i knew how many animals were killed to make my coat, but the coat i wear is completely fake, I finally got sick of it and dyed the fur purple, it looks very interesting now .

So definately make sure it is real fur before saying anything.

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

I have done many peaceful fur demonstrations for PETA. I have actually sat dressed as an animal in a cage! We usually set up in front of a fur store with signs and pass out literature. They always invite the media and I have been on the news several times.

PETA has nice little cards that you can hand out to people that are wearing fur coats. For more info please go to www.PETA.org

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Have you guys seen the anti-fur ads in magazines? There's a picture of a cute furry animal (I've seen a little fox and a seal pup) with the caption "She needs her fur more than you do". It's super cute and gets the message across without being offensive.

Like with people who abuse their pets, it's nearly impossible to make them change their ways, especially if you confront them and ask something like "Do you know how many animals died for that coat?" They made the decision to wear it - of course they know, and they did it anyway. You can approach them, but I'll bet you a year's worth of pellets that it won't make a bit of difference. The way to get people to stop wearing fur is to educate them while they're young.

It's sad that children can understand that killing an animal for its fur is wrong but adults can't.

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

I like faux! It's all soft and silky... He he! My mum and older sister have faux fur trimmed coats and I keep touching them... *shivers*

In Australia, a big thing with the souvenier shops are the toad purses. They are, TOAD purses. Ick! Like you'd want to buy them?http://www.boomerangshack.com/images2/toad.jpg
But then again, the cane toad is a pest here, and they are killed a LOT. A quick and painless way to ice 'em is with a golf club (if you do it right). I've never done it.

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Fur clothing is horrible! celebritys think there sooo great and glamarous when they wear it(yeah right) Why can't people buy faux fur? I would rather see an animal wearing a fur coat than a person. On tv programs I have see giftshops in foiregn countrys selling dried sea horses and crabs and shells(shells which had living things inside them) Why can't the goverment ban fur and selling dead animals?

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

What really annoys me is the ignorant old woman who still believe it's alright! I give them such dirty looks. My sister is actually beginning to believe fur is the warmest material and so in our cold climate what else could you wear? Ugh..

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Just tell her synthetics are specially formulated to keep her warm. There is no one in a lab trying to figure out how to make fur warmer. But there are lots of people trying to figure out how to make acrylic and other sythetics do things they didn't know they can do.

A good way not to insult people who wear fake fur (they did do the right thing, they sould be appluaded) would be to start the conversation off with: "Is that real fur?" If it is they will certianly start bragging about it. Then you can start your lecture. But if it's fake it's an opprutunity to thank someone for being a compasionate consumer.

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Once I went to this souvenier shop somewhere and they had all these toad purses for sale and they had a sign that said something like "Real Toad, only $60" Who'd want to buy a dead cane toad for $60 just to put some flipping money in?

Re: Wearing fur coats . . .

Has anyone ever changed anyone's mind about wearing fur just by walking up to them? I imagine that if you approached some stranger out of nowhere, they would be more confused and offended than anything else. (And, honestly, has anyone ever met a non-PETA member who took a PETA demonstration seriously? I crack up every time I see the local PETA folks sitting inside their cages. And I'm a long-time vegetarian who is currently majoring in Wildlife Conservation with an emphasis on rehabilitation.)
