Unhappy Couldn't wait one day...

I was at Petco buying some chews (which I havn't been able to find in store anywhere else) and a family walks up to the Guinea Pig Cage, proceeds to pick one, and asks to buy it. I walk up and gently suggest adoption. The woman says that she tried the shelter and there were none in so they were going to buy one. I am like, Orange County Cavy Haven has pigs if you could just wait one day there are plenty to choose from! She is like, my daughter is here & she wants one NOW. Ug! So I lecture her on proper piggie care- she didn't even know that they needed hay!

Maybe its a good thing a rescued pig didn't go to them, they would end up killing it!

Arg!

Liz

Re: Couldn't wait one day...

It's sad when someone buys on impulse and doesn't consider other options. Apparently a rescue pig really wasn't an option with this family since I'd imagine someone who considered it would have said something like, "Hey kid, we're going to wait and adopt a pig." Or as my mom would have told me, "I don't care when *you* want it. I'm the parent."

maeve100, *Thank you* for your willingness to step up and speak on behalf of cavies all over the world. It takes courage to just "jump" in and take an active role, especially in a pet store. Good for you.

Hats off to you maeve100.

Re: Couldn't wait one day...

None at the shelters? Is she nuts? As a volunteer for OCCH, I know there are pigs in shelters, not to mention all the calls we get from people who want to dump their pigs for whatever bogus reason they decide to give. That was a cop out answer.

When we had time, my 9 yr old used to monitor the pet stores in the area. She would see people looking at the pigs and she would go right up to them and tell them about breeding mills and how they could save the life of the pig by contacting the shelters, or OCCH.

Thank you for trying to step in and help.

That's great that you tried to help her. Some people just buy things on impulse and in a few weeks, no longer want it anymore.

She is a very smart 9 year old. Tell her I think that she's great for stepping in like that and making a difference. She's more sophisticated than many adults.
